TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 15 June 1917

TO ?lE EDITOlR OF THIU ADVERTISEI. Sir,-Your Ellham correspondent in his notes, dated June 1, states that " Peace i6 declared betweena 'tatgpayer' and Cr Taylor." Such is not the 'case as far as I am concerned. I have beenoquiet, thinking perlaps that Cr Taylor wsuld mend his unlawful ways, or that he would have been asked for an explanation by one, at least, out of the eight councillore but, no, not one of them had the" backbone" to bring the matter forward. Why ? I am aware that It is rather a delicate thing for a fellow colleague to bring another to account for his wrong-doings. Two meetings have been held, and not a word has been said. How different matters would have been if a rote. payer defied the laws and regulations of the Council in the same way that Cr Taylor has been guilty of. I did not think it would be necessary for me to remind councillors thnt justice is justiro and right is right, and whether the oeCtuder be a councillor or otherwise, no diotiuction should be made....

TO Ti?e baDORn OF THE ,ADVORTIB.eR Dear lilr,--So I have a whole column to answer this time.. Well done ; the more the merrier, more so when' the arguments are so weak. MIr aidlay doesn't give the military authorities much credit for their ability to teach the art of rifle shooting. As he has been studying and prnictising the art for well nigh 20 years I wonder he doesn't offer them his services in return for the sport he has had. He is well within the age and has not much encumbrance. I presume he thluki conscription would be a graud thing for the other fellow, A man who has been at the front tells ne that the old stlyle deliberate shooting is not o...

PRESBYTERIAN SERVICE, C0RUBBY OREEK. On Sunday . night, 3rd, June, the Rev. Archer Harris, locum tenons for Captaiu-Chaplain Douglas Bruce, con ducted his final"brvice, which he made illustrious by relating many wonderful aneodotes, particularly about Billy Sunday, a professional base-ball player, who, while playing base ball,. was in. vited to attend a mission service;whiqh he did, and from that time was oasnged into a most. powerful worker for the Kingdomt of God, and even, as that helper infllenced him, so he proves influential in helping thousands of pre cious lives, thus a great mission work is in progress, promising to be world. wide. Mr Harris heartily thanked each and all for attending the services, also for the kindness and hospitality extended during his ministry asmongsC t-hem. THE PAROCHIAL BALL. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 15 June 1917

THE PAROCHIAL BALL. Hurstbridge Hall last Friday evening was the centre towards which waggonettes, buggies, jinkers, and other vehicles were to be sooni wending their way from every point of the eompass, and when the later ones arrived they found the Hall brilliantly lighted and decorated, and soon a very large number of ladies and gentlemen young 'and old-had begun to take an active part in the third Annual Parochial Ball. Sharp on the adver. tiaed hour the enticing strains from Luckman's Band broke out on the evening air, and the Hall was soon a lively and animated socone. The deco. rations in the Hall were neat and not too profuse,"and it was obvious that great taste and judgment had been exercised throughout. " There were naeny very pretty dresses-pale blue, 'white, and, pink,. which contrasted beautifully with the darker shades and black dresses of the (chiefly)' matronly members of the assemblage. Taking it altogether-faces, figures, dresses and general surroundings-it was one...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 15 June 1917

TO TIM EDITOR OF TIIE ADVERTISRNI. Sir,-Your correspondent "Honour to Whom Honour is Due" now admits two of" my facts," namely, that the Hurst bridge line is the only line round Mol bourne that had the honour (?)-(1) of buying the land and presenting it FRET to the Railway Department, and (2) of paying "local" freights and fares. Your correspondent is admitting them in strict mathematical order at the rate of ONE fact per fortnight. He has evidently adopted my advice of obtaining the Act of Parliament and getting his house keeper to read it to him once each night and morning for a week. But apparently my prescription is too severe. Once each night and morning for a week with his housekeeper has been too much for his nervous system and there has supervened a nervous breakdown, and all your cor respondent can now do is to keep on saying "the Act ofParliament is UNTROE," " I PROVED IT TO BE UNTRUE." I shall repeat FACT (3). By the Act of Parliament under which our line was built, " woe...
