The first progress report of the Civil Service Commission iras laid on the table of tlie House to-day, and' proved the most voluminous document of its kinil that has ever come before the South Auotra Han-legis lature. Bat the progress report is confined torecommendations in the Chief Secretary's department. The first retrenchment proposed Is in the office of Under Secretary. The Minister of ^Education, the Hod. J. C. F. Johnson, moved ior leave to intro duce an Education Bill, bat as the measure was not prepared jet, be would not state the lines on which it was to be based. A heated debate followed, in i which a strong objection was expressed if the measure contains a provision for the subsidy of private schools. Other members favored the subsidy, and expres sed the hope that the amount would be larger than that in the Bill formerly in troduced by the Hon, John Colton, which the Hon. J. C. F. Johnson said was the basis of tbe proposed Bill. Two trains left for Melbourne to-day with 350 passengers.
