The Suez Canal. [Newspaper Article] — The Bathurst Post — 15 June 1883

$to $mz (tyml The holders of scrip in Suez Canal shares ought to be realizing a nice little profit, if the Directors are able to keep within reasonable limits the working expenses incidental to dredging1 and keeping1 the ; banks m repair. The fleet of vessels trading to the East has increased so enormously of late that the channel is found too small for the traffic : in fact, at times traffic has been entirely suspended. To remedy this, the directors have decided to con struct a 6econd canal ; this will prow of immense advantage in facilitating despatch, because vessels Will not have to bide their time tili the waterway is cleared for the passage, but outward bound will follow one another in succession through one channel, and the homeward bound will take the other. Such news affords an evidence of the value placed upon the trade and commerce of the Southern hemisphere, and is indicative of the greater strides yet to be taken in bracketing together the mother country and the colonie...

STOCKTAKING Comes but Once a Year at K WEBB & CQ.'S. Wlien the time arrives, any lines found ' slow of sale ' during the year are brought ont and subjected to the ' EXTREME PENALTY of the LAW,' in accordance with the terms of the 'HEW CRIMINAL LAW ACT.' The proprietors decline to keep the dull, slothful, and law-breaking at the expense of the State ; hence they are brought before the judge and ordered something they will remember (a real good lashing — sometimes twenty, sometimes fifty strokes), and TURNED OUT at considerably under their real value. The Sheffield WteMy Telegraph of March 3rd, 188S4 says : — A bankrupt tea-dealer in Glasgow has been letting out the secrete of the trade with refreshing frankness. When interrogated as to his mode of conducting business, he placidly avowed that he was in the habit of giving away sugar to his customers. With a pound of tea at 2s. 8d. he gave four pounds of sugar value one shilling. done. They were told that the tea cost Is. 4d., and the gratis sugar being deducted, there was left fourpence profit on each pound of tea sold. As the working expenses of the business had to come out of this fourpence, one has little difficulty in recognising the consistency of the debtor's appearauce in the Bankruptcy Court with a balance-sheet showing £211 assets, to meet liabilities amounting to £1,046. A Hint. — If you can't spell, write such a bad hand that nobody can tell what the letters are. A young lady recently received a dozen offers of marriage in one week. She is a very plain-looking girl. The Bag Question. [Newspaper Article] — The Bathurst Post — 14 July 1883

i&tf §ag ^itfdiom We aU have r-our grievances in turn. Well, it is only fair that the cares and troubles of this life should be divided. If they were not, we would find many , succumbing to them, and bidding adieu to our fajr clime, at much earlier ages than their proper time. It is something unusual for farmers to have 'trouble,' at any rate beyond the want of rain at certain seasons, and then the getting of ' too much rain ' at other times. Unless it is that occasionally the liver gets out of order and a ' bilious fit' seizes &fetv of them, who are encouraged by an odd outside protectionist or two (who, by some mistake, settled down in New South Wales, believing or hoping they were in Victoria) to ' cry out ' for a dtttp on produce. The protectionists tell us that until we get a duty of from 3d. to 6d. per bushel on our wheat, maize, barley, &c, little or no farming can ever be done in this colony. The deliveries of wheat (says the Herald, July 5, 1883) by ...

The following advertisment appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald a short time since : — /^ENEBAL SERVANT WANTED.— One who is frilling ^ that her fair features should be fanned by the gentle zephyrs of the Pacific Ocean, and who will devote the whole of her time reading the latest novels, with her delicate form reclining under the nnbragcous shade of th« weeping willow, symbolical of the heroine in the sensa tional novel of the day. A few moments of her valuable time will be required each day to supervise the SLAVET (the mistress of the house) while she is cooking the various meals, cleaning and dusting the rooms, tmAing the beds, doing the washing, cleaning the boots, feeding the poultry, weeding the garden, &c., &c.
