? @ ? — ? Death by Drowning. ? It is our sad duty to record the death by drowning in the Richmond; River of Miss Emma Gertrude, a very; promising daughter of Mr. W. H. Gorton, of Groen ridge. It appears that 011 Monday last the girl was bathing at an old crossing, 111 conipauy with a number of other child ren, when she suddenly got into deep water, and altlipugh her you nger ?? sister made an effort to save her the unfortun ate girl salik after struggling violently ful some time. Some of the children raised an alarm, but having to go-some distanco for help, time elapsed. 'Mr. F. Scheiler dived for the body; bub failed to discover it. Later 011 : it: was recovered. Under the circumstances the usual inquiry was dispensed with. A doctor was Sent for, but lie pronounced life to have tied. A very pleasant surprise was given to tho inmates of Bilongin Hospital 011 Xraas Eve, iu the shape of a hamper of gifts '.from the: friends and well-wisliers of this institution. It comprised the .following.':' — Ham, wine, jellies, pre served-: fruit, sauce, jatn, cocoa, tea, cakeB-, puddings, biscuits, junket tablets, sago, rice, honey, sugar, fruit, melons, ginger, etc. Many other gifts have been received during the year, including par cels of old 'linen, cushions, one pair feather pillows, periodicals, cakes, wine, cornflour, fruit, turkey, flowers, fowls, eggs, cream, two-sets mosquito nets and drapes, invalid couch, aud many others.
