Commuter problems to air in April meeting [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 29 March 1983

Commuter problems to air in April meeting By Lisa Noro Is there enough gas in the car? What's the weather forecast? Will there be a traffic jam this morning? All of these questions concern a large number of students attending school here - the commuters. Approximately seventy percent of students on Capitol Campus are commuters. Many drive from as far as Gettysburg to as close as Middletown. Yet, they all share the same gripes. Some gripes include the question of whether there should be a light on Rt. 230? Why does Fruehauf have the right of way in the rear parking lot? Is it necessary to pay to park each semster? Does the University need that income? Where is the official car pooling board? Shouldn't there be a service doing that? According to some, commuter students need a forum. Dr. John Teske, co-chairman of the Student Affairs Committee, plans to provide just that. On April 5,1983, at 12:15 and 5:30 in the Lion's Den, commuters will get to voice their opinion's. "We are ...

Holtz enjoys banner year [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 29 March 1983

Holtz enjoys banner year By Robert Rejmaniak Although the Penn State Capitol Campus basketball team won only four of twentyfour games, one player, forward Lee Holtz, of Pleasantville, had a banner year. "My grades have dropped a little, but I've prospered in other ways. What I've learned outside the classroom as team cocaptain can never be taken away." Lee Holtz Basketball Team Captain As a co-captain, Holtz provided the leadership that rookie coach Charles Bowen can appreciate. Holtz averaged over 19 points a game, scoring 20 or more points twelve times, and scored a record setting 42 points in a game against Shenandoah College. One of only two returning players, the 6'1" twenty-three year old Holtz has put his name down in several categories in the Capitol Campus record books. Last season Holtz led the team in total points, 265; average points per game, 11.5; most points scored in a game, 26; most field goals in a game, 12; and most free throws in a...

Co-Captain Steve Stapf is ex pected to continue his superb defense in center field and fine hitting at the plate. In the infield, returning seniors Scott Johnson and Mike Skurko are expected to nail down 2nd and 3rd bases respectively. Capitol's pitching staff is also expected to fair well this season. Co-Captain Bobby Hulsizer will head the staff with strong backing from seniors Dean Jacobs and Gary Torcaso. The team is optimistic about the up-coming season. Tainted water now safe DER says [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 26 April 1983

Tainted water now safe DER says By Jim Knsalan Is spite of the recent discovery of carcinogenic contaminants in the Capitol Campus water system, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources reports the water here is safe to drink. Tests by DER on water samples taken from ten wells at Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) on March 2 showed the presence of two carcinogenic (cancer-producing) hydrocarbons, tnchloroethylene ( TCE ) and tetrachloroethylene, accor ding to a statement from DER cited in a communication from the Public Information Office at University Park. One well showed a 93 parts per billion (ppb) level of TCE, and a 13 ppb level of tetrachloroethylene. This well has been voluntarily taken out of operation. A March 2 DER sampling of Capitol Campus water, which is supplied by the HIA wells, show ed a TCE level of 15 ppb and a 1.8 ppb level of tetrachloroethylene, according to an inter office memo from Duane R. S...

Clauser Capitol Campus' radio station, WNDR, is making a bid to upgrade its facilities, pending the actions of Penn State administration. ' WNDR has learned of the opportunity to move to the FM band with a complete 10 watt facility soon resting idle at Penn State's Wilkes-Barre Campus. Wilkes-Barre will be abandoning the entire broadcasting program at the end of Spring Term 1983. Dr. Brookholder, Wilkes-Barre's Assistant Director for Academic Affairs says: "We have plans to dismantle the station before next Fall because I know it's the director's plans to convert the whole radio area into faculty offices." What are the chances of Capitol Campus getting the Wilkes-Barre equipment? Dr. Brookholder says the university has a system where decisions are very centralized, adding, "With the way things work in the university — if University Park wants it then in al...

TCE found, Middletown wells closed [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 26 April 1983

TCE found, Middletown wells closed "WATER," continued from pg. 1 sequently in our water here. Knaub says they could have been there for a short time, or "it could be many years." Asked why these chemicals suddenly appeared, rather than showing up in earlier regular analyses, Knaub said, "Nobody tested for them before, and the equipment to test for them is just recently available to us." The test of the HIA wells and the Capitol Campus distribution system came after tests of Middletown Borough wells showed the presence of TCE and tetrachloroethylene. One Middletown well was also voluntarily taken out of operation. The DER is not sure where these contaminants came from. David Mashek, Deputy Press Secretary of DER says, "Our solid waste and water quality management bureaus in the regional office are working to determine potential sources of the contamination." Mashek says, "TCE was used widely as a degreaser for aircraft parts," At the time when Olmsted Air Force Base was here,...
