. De Lesseps on Animal Food . There is no law against a man outliving his usefulness , and it is natural to expect that with old age comes senility . It is credited to Count De Lesseps , of Suez Canal fame , as saying that one pound of dry wheat flour is worth three pounds of beef for sustaining life , and that it takes eight pounds of grain to make a pound of flesh . This is correct according to the books , and even correct in practice to a certain extent , butwhen the distinguished engineer advocates expelling all animal life from the face of the earth—except such as are necessary to dig his canals , it may be supposed , —and when he asks in this * connection why cattle , hogs and sheep are fed cereals , he shows his narrow views of the economy of nature . All the matter of grain not assimilated by the animals fed is returned to the soil in the shape of manure , and thus the land is sustained in fertility . Again , it is not true that one pound of flour will sustain human life as ...

When Should the Milk Be Used . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 12 December 1885

When Should the Milk Be Used . Many dairymen do not sell the milk from the cow immediately after parturition . At that time the milk is unfit for food , nature so adapting all females that the first milk may serve as a cathartic . In New York the law prohibits selling milk drawn from cows fifteen days previous to , or five days after parturition , but as it is impossible to enforce such a law , it is practically inoperative , yet , as we are aware , on a majority of farms the calf is removed before it is three days old , and no evidence is required to believe that the milk drawn on the fourth and fifth days is used as food . The truth is , that at least a week should elapse before the milk from a cow just in should be used , and she should also be dried off at least a month before calving . There is quite a difference in the milk from a fresh cow and one that has been milked for several months , as nature conforms the material , in composition , to a certain extent , to the necessit...

Watch for the Roup . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 12 December 1885

Watch for the Roup . This is the time for colds and diseases incident to damp or severe weather . In winter the roup is the most troublesome of all diseases . It appears in various forms , but the cause is usually dampness . The symptoms are swollen eyes , discharge from the nostrils , and sore throat , though the three symp toms do not usually appear at the same time . A hoarse choking sound while the fowl is breathing is one of the surest indications . The best remedy is dryness and warmth . The food should be nourishi > g , and seasoned with a little salt and ground ginger . If the head and eyes are swollen they should be bathed with warm water , wiped dry , and annotated with a mixture of a teaspoonfull of glycerine with ten drops of carbolic acid , care being taken not to get it in the eyes of the bird . Give a teaspoonful of a solution of a tablespoonful each of boracic acid and hyposulphite of soda in half a pint of water , but if the flock is large , dosing the bi...

APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 12 December 1885

APIARY . Bees in Winter . Mr . L . C . Root , a well-known authority on bees , in New York State , upon the care of bees in December , says that in winter , when not occupied in manipulating our bees , we should take advantage of the leisure to inform ourselves upon all that relates to the advancement of our pursuit . Those who can do so , should attend the various conventions to be held , and take part ii a free interchange of views , which constitutes the value of such gatherings . Those who cannot attend should study the practical works of the day , and compare the teachings of these , with their own experiences . Bees should require very little attention at this season . Set traps for rats and mice , if the wintering rooms are not proof against them . See that the eavetroughs and conductors are so arranged that water will not settle about the walls , and make the wintering rooms damp and musty . Beginners should decide upon the kind of hives , and boxes , and other appliances to...
