Farm . Garden and : Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

Farm . Garden and : Orchard HETTY GREEN AS A FARMER . UP in Venniont there is a very beautiful • country place where Mrs . Hetty Green goes every summer with her husband and her daughter . Were you to meet her any day walking along the road with a pail of berries or coming in from the gardens with / a basket of tomatoes-you would judge her to be the happy wife of a well-to-do farmer . I m here , says the wealthy Mrs . Hetty , because folks can t find me out without coming a long way . I m here for my husband s- rheumatism , and I m here because my daughter isn t strong , and , more than all , I m here for the reason that I m a born farmer , . and I love to work the ground and raise crops . I ve raised everything we ve had on the table for a month , even to the meat . You may doubt the meat part of my farming , but it- is true . We live on chickens , and . ducks , ¦ and turkeys , and . eggs . I m not here all the time , because I ve- other interests , but some day I am going to live ...

Morgan County , Col . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

Morgan County , Col . Morgan County is NOT way out on the frontier . Dont allow any idea of that sort to take possession of you . Nothing could he further J rom the truth . Morgan County is more prosperous than any section of equal size in Illinois or Ohio . Its citizens are as intelligent as any in the country . Its educational and religious advantages as good as the best . Its climate as healthful and pleasant as any in the world . You must visit Morgan County to appreciate it properly . • Morgan County has any number of advantages over nine out of every ten farming sections in the United States . No crop failures ; no malariano hot winds ; no intense heat ; no bitter cold . The people are friendly . The system of irrigation is co-operative and economical . Last year s yields are beyond belief . Think of 10 per cent of the wheat fields in the county averaging 50 bushels to the acre . Oats , barley , corn , potatoes and alfalfa made just as good a showing . One man made $ 1 , 350 f...

Jr \ That hideous and deathly ¦ z-s * ( Ifcs * demon of sickness—constipation , is an easy enough thing to cure if you take the right- medicine . Constipation is one of the commonest things in the world . It is really one of the most serious things . Fully nine-tenths of all the ordinary sickness of mankind is due to this , one cause . If you place an obsruc- , tion in the gutter , it will stop the . flow of water , and gradually a mass of poisonous , putrefying matter will accumulate . That is exactly what happens in th « digestive organs when constipation begins . Poisonous matter accumulates and . is forced into the blood . Tt goes all over the body and causes all sorts of symptoms . A few of these are dizziness , flatulence , heartburn , palpitation , headaches , loss of appetite , loss of sleep , foul breath , distress after eating , biliousness and eruptions of the skin . These things are unpleasant , but they are not serious . The serious things come afterward . Doctor Pierce...

NEWS COM / HENTS [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

NEWS COM / HENTS Emperor Billy has made a complete back-down . The threatening attitude of Grandma s slipper was evidently too much for his valor . ,, The republicans in Congress have decided to wait , 1 says a republican organ : yes , wait and turn their backs while the goldbug syndicates and combinations rob the till . Senator Hoar says the populist party will come into power simultaneously with the advent of the millenium . It is remarkable that the astute republican senator should couple these two together . It cost the United States government more to place the late bond issue of $ 62 , 000 , 000 than the Lincoln administration paid to float the entire debt of $ 2 , 500 , 000 , 000 , and yet the Morgan Syndicate posed as a sort of charitable institution ) which saved the country from ruin . The i-cent copper coin of the United States is enjoying an increased popular demand . It is a significant fact that the coinage of this piece has of very recent years taken up more of the ti...

Herds , Flocks and Dairy [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

Herds , Flocks and Dairy A VALUABLE STOCK BOOK . THE mule is one of the best paying animals the farmer can raise . Too little • Attention has been given this branch of animal husbandry , still less to the style , character and breeding of the sire used . Some of the best breeders of jacks and Jennets in this country realizing this fact & nd . desiring to improve the quality of the ( mules have formed an association and established a Jack Stock Stud Book . Two volumes of this have been published . These two volumes bound in one -volume have just been issued , and as there lias been so little published in regard to Jack and mule breeding , the compiler has . endeavored to incorporate in this volume not only the rules of entry and the pedigrees and numbers of animals entered , £ > ut also a great deal of matter very valuable and instructive to all interested in jack rand mule breeding . It has an interesting description of the . different breeds of jacks , writte...

HOGS FOR 1896-7 . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

HOGS FOR 1896-7 . THE average farmer acts before lie thinks seriously . He is serious enough at the present time . The lowprices of pork , corn , bats , etc ., are , a disturbance to . financial ascendancy ., He concludes that hogs dont pay , from a view of the past season , and neglects to plan for the coming season . It is not remembered that the average . values of pork for any five consecutive years , always show a fair average profit , it is forgotten , too , that two successive seasons of low prices seldom occur in the hog markets . The hog grower too often counts the entire value of his product as corn or oats entirely . The value of the raw grain is often found to equal the same apparent quantity of grain in the net form of pork . No account is taken , at times , of vegetables , pasturage , and other items of food that enter into the consumption of the pork as it is most safely produced . The hog is healthier from a mixed diet . This should always include grazing , or in lie...
