HIXTS FOR THE HOUSEHOLD. Canned Crab-apples. To 5 pounds apples take 3 pounds sugar; make a sirup, and when bailing- put in apples and boil until soft; seal immediately in neaieu cans; no paring. Liquid Shoe-polish Dissolve 31 ounces of shellac in J pint of alcohol. Rub smooth 25 grains of lampblack with C drams of cod-liver oil, and mix. A few drops are to be applied to tlieleath er with a sponge. Egg-plant Fried. Cut in J-inch slices, salt, and place one over the other, with an inverted plate and hcawiron on ton. The salt and weight draw ont the strong water. It should lie prepared at night if wanted for breakfast, or in the morn ing if for dinner. Dredge with flour and fry thoroughly in beef-drippingj, lanl, or Duller. Apple Fruit Cake. II A Ship-load of Honkers. An American Consular officer, now in Washington on leave of absence, re lates a very funny occurrence which came under his observation during his official residence in Liverpool. A suc cessful and wealthy shipowner, having devoted more time to the business of moncv-making than to the unnecessary embellishments of the intellect, was considered by his business associates a little "off" in his orthography. Ho sent an order to Bombay, and, among other things, wrote for two monkeys, which he wanted to present to some friends; but. departing from the usual mode of spelling the word tico, he put it loo. Perhaps the handwriting was not very legible, as is often the case with others than illiterate shipowners. At any rate the master of the ship read it 100, as did also the agent in Bombay.
