Our Currency. The hope that in the natural course of events the present condition of our linances would be improved, aud the same currency brought into use in all parts of the country, seems to be doomed to disappointment. It has been generally conceded thatein cling ing so tenaciously to the metallic cur rency on this coast, we have done our trade incalculable injury, and retarded for years the development of our resour ces. The gradual approach to an eqlribrinm in gold and greenbacks du ring the months of October and No vember, leading many to expect a re sumption of specie payments, has still ed for the time being the cry for the adoption in this State of the national currency, but gold is again rising in New York, and we see nothing to in dicate that its use as a circulating me diun...

That no country in which the bulk nt the lands is held by a few individu als ever becomes truly prosperous, and the home of an industrious and con tented people, is a truth established by the experience of mankind. The tillers of the soil should own the laud they work, and within reasonable lim its, the smaller the tracts, the better. California is cursed with the evil of land monopoly. U, is retarding her settlement, and more than auything else preventing the acquirement of a steady, and industrious population, interested in the prosperity of the State, and devoted to its improvement. Neither is the holding of these im mense tracts profitable in the long run, lo the owner. The interest on their value, the taxes and other charges, soon a...

SAN FRANCISCO CORRESPONDENCE. San Francisco, Dec. 15, 1873. ■ We have been favored with glorious rains for many a day past, and our streets are in splendid condition, all being uiiele deep in mud. This de scription of weather must be especially unpleasant for those aristocratic edi tions of the "gutter snipe" order known as "curbstone brokers," whose only office desk is their hat, and only office the open air; the perpetual leak in the roof of their oftice must be very trying, even in slack times, but when stocks are booming as they are now, the continual moisture must dampen their ardor to a remarkable degree,...

The legislature of our State has fol lowed the.example set by lowa and Illinois, and undone the legislation by which the property of one man could be voted away for the benefit of an other. In no ease where such laws have been tried has the result been otherwise than disastrous, and yet there Is a howl in the localities that have not had time to get into debt, against the repeal of the act. One en lightened Journal even argues that the repeal ia illegal, because "the legisla ture cannot pass a law Impairing the obligation of contracts," and contracts nave been made.ln various places to pay other people's money, against their will Into the hands of railroad companies. It does not seem to occur to tkese people that such a contract is itself a...

As an advertising medium it is consequently .of DOUBLE their value. The Duty of the Democrats. The Democratic party, what is left of it, has been making earnest profes sions of honesty. "Down with mon opoly" has been its rallying cry, and Its leaders have asked us to believe that they are the especial champions of the people. We are afraid they are misguided, that they are more anxious to rejuvenate the Democratic party, than to serv«» the cause of reform. The late elections if they nave done any thing, have demonstrated that the people are disgusted with the tyran ny of its partisan organizations, and lhat regardless of former party affili ations, they are determined to purge the government, National, State and local, of the abominations that have crept into it.
