THE CHIEFTAIN. CATTLE SHIPMENTS. , Talking about cattle shipments of late years, they don't hold a candle to the number of head that have passed over the Santa Fe this season. To the 1st of June 166,872 head had gone north cither for feed or market, the nn precedented number of 105,191 head passing through Albuquer que during the month of May. , The unprecedented cattle ship ments over the Santa Fe this sea spn might be laid to the number of Old Mexico cattle passing through, but the figures show otherwise. They are divided as follows: -New Mexico and Ari zona,. 120,870; Old Mexico, 35,000; Texas, 1 1,000. Citizen. THE GRANDEST REMEDY. Mr. It. B. Greeve. merchant, of Chilhowie, Va., certifies that he had consumption, was given up to die, sought all medical treat ment that money could procure, tried all cough remedies he could hear of, but gut no relief; spent many nights sitting up in a chair; was induced to try Dr. King's New Discovery, and was cured by use of two bottles. It looks as though congress would adjourn by the middle ot July. It is true the times are hard but they are getting better all the time. Last month 1,500,000 new silver dollars were added to the cur rency. The tariff bill is progressing in the senate as fast as could be ex pected. , . New Mexico has resources to make it one of the wealthiest states in the union. The croakers seem to think that prosperity is something you go out and break off in chunks. Last year the United States was the largest producer in the world of gold, silver, copper and iron. It is gratifying to note that the appointment of Governor Otero gives satisfaction all over the ter ritory. Worse than horrible and fie...

THE CHIEFTAIN. The Eighteenth annual com mencement exercises of the Mount Carmel academy were held at the convent grounds last Tuesday night. THE CHIEFTAIN. BY CHIEFTAIN PUBLISHING CO. ÁV. S. WILLIAMS, Editor. TEUM8 OK HCBSCRIITIOH, (Strictly in Advance. One year 2 M ii months . 1.8. Japan ha given up trying to bulklose Hawaii. New Mexico cattle bring double the price they did one year ago. There arc about 500 Chinamen who arc naturalized citizens of the United States. There is little or no question but that Hawaii will soon be a territory oí the United States. We arc another week nearer to the restoration of the policy of protection and its tw in prosperity. hvcry day s delay in the pas sage of the new tariff has been due to needless discussion on the part of democratic senators. The bad break of the New Mexico people in the election of last fall was a fatal blow for state hood for a long time to come. Those who are whining about the slow return of prosperity are much like the man who spends ten years in getting sick and then expects the doctor to cure him in a week.
