Once upon a time so runs the story, and n pleasant little story it is when Louis XII. of France was at the royal eastle'of PIossis-lcs-Tours, he went one evening into the kitchen, where he found a small hoy engaged in turning a spit for tho roasting of a loin of beef. The lad had a pecu liarly bright looking face; keen, bright cj'os, and features really flue ; and his appearance greatly prepos sessed the king in h:s favor. THE LIQUOR TRAF21C, The closing of Uio liquor saloons on .Saturday Inst, on nccount of its being election day, suggests a few reflections which may he considered ns pertinent. To a nt ranger just arrived in the country, it would unturnlly excite a good ninny ques tions, to bo told that by the laws of the country the keepers of these naloons, and everybody else, are strictly forbidden to sell, give or furnish any intoxicating drink to 'native Hawaiian at any lime, and that as a rule, the law is faithfully observed by tho saloou keepers and the gicat majority of foreigners. The first question asked by the inno cent stranger would be, If the natives cannot get liquor, why then close the saloons ? It. would le difficult to frame a satisfactorj' answer. Perhaps it is thought lest . to " assume a virtue, if you have it not." The fact is admitted that, notwith- standing the law, the natives can get as much liquor n...

K. r,1J iV t i, ti ih Tl'KSDAY, JUNE C, 1882. THE LIQUOR TKAFFIO AGAIN. It appears to be quite generally agreed on nil bauds, both by tbo advocates of prohibition and of license, thai- the Btate of the liquor tralflo in these Islands at the present time demands some legislative action. The law prohibiting the Bale to natives would be a broad farce, if it were not unfortunately a serious trag edy. It is safe to say, that a large proportion of the license, taken out to ictail goods, &c, in the country places are more cloaks for the sale of intoxicating dritjks. Two or three bills have been pre pare I on the .object ',f r cither rcgu liling or putting an end to the liquor tratllc, and will be up for dis ciibsion in a few days. One, which may be colled tho prohibition bill, pi o ides for the importation of in toxicating drinks by tho Board of Health only, to be nold by agents appointed by the said Board to per sons licensed to use the same for scientific, medical, religious or ine- ...

FIRE-PROOr LIMITa One of the conservative measures which wo hope to see passed by the Legislative Assembly, is an Act which is talked of to prescribe cer tain limits in- the city of Honolulu within which none but fire-proof buildings shall be erected. Gradu ally, as the city grows compact in that portion where business is trans acted, the interest of property hold ers prompts them to build of brick or htone to replace wi rnout wooden structures ; butas yet there is no legal obligation for one to do so, and thus nn obstinate owner of a wooden shanty may continue to maintain a standing menace to the safety of his surrounding ncighbois, who have no remedy at law. It is hardly necessary to state, that in all well-regulated cities of the. civilized world, restrictions of the nature spoken of exist. Indeed, in any considerable town in tho New Eng...
