4 NEWS ITEMS. Duluth now has three daily papers, Tribune, Times and Evening Herald. The latter is anew paper. The ice in the Hed River at 'Grand Forks below the railroad bridge broke on Monday and moved down the river about half a mile. The water rose to twenty one feet above high water mark. No damage is reported from the rise. An election will be held in Yankton county the 24th inst to vote upon the question of refunding the railroad in debtedness by issuing new four per cent bonds in lieu of the old eight per cent bonds with accrued interest. If the proposition carries, which now seems probable, it will settle and dispose of that incumbus that has for years been made to hang over the entire territory so un justly. DUI-UTH HEKAW At a prayer meet ing in Spencei Brook, a brother con fessed that he had stolen timber from the railway lands, but would never do so again. The Alsrt DAILY AND WEEKLY MARSHALL McCLURE. IT is likely to turn out. that tlic star route trials arc even a more stupendous fraud than the steals for which the Dor aey gang are being tried. Merrick, coun sel for the government is reported as say ing that lie is a "stayer" aud that if liis life is spared and the 9100 a day holds out he will prosecutc the star routers un til old age unfits him for service. If that is the complexion of the case the sooner the star route cases are dismissed the better the government will be oil and the better the ends of justice will be sub served. TIIKKE can be no mistake about the meaning of the United States govern ment in its policy upon the extradition question. It is plain English divested of •11 ambiguity. The Bourbon state organ of democracy leaves Carter in doubt as to whether it means to call him a fool or a knave. The capital removal kickers have made a discovery in which they take a great deal of comfort. The attorneys for the people in the quo warranto proceedings have discovered, so it is reported, that the appointment of the commissioners by legislative enactment, was in direct con flict with sections 7, 15 and IS of the or ganic act. J,' 5 *The DAILY AND hu'i TJIE Nashua, Iowa, Post tells of an emigrant to Dakota from that place who was almost financially ruined by shipping a lot of grain out with bis goods, which, as soon as the tram crossed the Dakota line, began to sprout and grow and before reaching its destination was nearly ready to harvest. We had thought of cau tioning people on this point several times but feared they would think it was a canard and would doubt other matters published in the Alert, but now since our Iowa cotemporary has made it public we feel called upon to say a word on the subject. We do not know from personal knowledge that the circumstance which the Post relates is true, but from our knowledge of the productive qualities of Dakota we can easily believe it is true The unfortunate man who met with the loss has our sympathy and we feel somewhat con science stricken for not having informed him and others who have mit with sim ilar losses before. But so far as possible we will make ame...

N^WS BY TELEGRAPH. ChtMt OU Fire. JERSEY CITY, May 10—The works of the Standard oil company at near (he city the most extensive in this country, are on fire and about one half of the prop erty is now destroyed. The fire started during a severe storm this morning. One of the large tanks near the shore was struck and exploded by lightning. The burning oil poured out Tike an angry river and flowed down the avenue be tween the rows of enormous tanks to wards the river. In a short time the flames communicated with three high tanks and they all exploded instantan eously with a terrific force. Fragments of iron were burled the distance of a mile. The burning oil was scattered in all di rections. The entire fire department have been summoned Dut their services are al most useless as the burning streams of eil poured through the yard firing tank after tank on the east side and licking up buildings in its way. T^m ti *w fjpfcr i. I 1 SRT* w*,' ft R-CR The Alert DAILY AND WEEKLY MARSHALL McCLURE. Senator Mahone, though small in stat nre has made quite a number of big sen sations in the political circles of the country. He is just now agitating the "F. P. V.'s" by addressing the colored ministers ot his state with a view, it is suspected, of securing their influence over the vote of their congregations. There is no telling how much it would move those colored dispensers of the gospel to receive a personal letter from one ao high in the official atmosphere as Mahone If he should promise them each "40 acres and a mule" he would no doubt {jet a gratifying response at the polls. THERK is reported to be a coolness now between Senatot Logan and the adminis tration caused by the dismissal of one of Logan's frtcnd3 from a subordinate posi uon in the collector's office in hicago.
