NEW YoRK, July 13.-It was fortunate for the bull contingent of the market that the announcement of the engage ment of $24(I,000 in gold for shipment today was not made until after the close of business of the stock exchange yester day. Had it been known that the first break in the lines of the bonl syndicate was about to be made, there would un doubtedly have been a flurry on the board, in whi:h values might have suf fered severely. Toe amount of gold to be exported becomes important only by rearon of the fact of is being the first gold shipment since the syndicate con tracted to prevent the exportation of gold. Curietso, July 1t.-The demonetiza tion act of 1873 was the main subject of the IHorr-Harvey debate. After some miscellaneous sparring Harvey charged corruption in the passage of the act de monetizing of silver, Hlorr in reply re pudiated the inference that the citizens of the States United were all corrupt and none of their women virtuous. Horr declared it was not true that every man had his price. Members of congress were as honest as the average American citizen. He knew whereof he spoke, for he had been a member of that body himself. Hlorr then took up the history of the demonetization act and proceeded to show the stages through which it passed, and that its final enactment was not till after it had been before con gress nearly three years.
