Fireside Department. How to keep the Boys from Smoking. It is astonishing Low unanimous ly everybody condemns smoking, in boys. Father, mother, uncle John, sister Mary, and all arc alike shock cd if Charley is seen with a cigarette, or Tom discovered pulling away at dried corn silk behind the barn. It is instantly .suspected that he has Deen guilty ol pipes and tobacco in ine past, ana predicted that he will fall a victim to unnumbered vices in the future. Now; I don't like to see a bright eyed .bpy.lparning to smoke. I am sorry when I detect, as I sometimes do, when I kiss certain favorites of mine, the odor of smoke on their breath. It gives me pain! Yet I can sec whence comes the want of the boy and why he finds such an irresistable. temptation and charm in somethirig'to' smoke. He thinks it is manly. The very father whose commands are laid upon him not to do it,, regales himself after dinner with acigar, or sits and reads the evening long, in, to the boy, a -de lightful .and; .r...

His father and mother were both earnest Christians, and it almost broke their hearts to see their son so oDDOsed to the Redeemer. On one occasion they induced him to go with them to hear a celebrated minister, He accompanied them simply to please them, and for no hiirher motive. The sermon hap pened to be upon the glories of heaven. It was a very extraordin ary sermon, and was calculated to make every ' Christian in the audi ence leap for joy. The young man was much gratified with the elo quence of 4hd preacher, but nothing more; he gave him credit for supe rior oratorical: ability, and was in terested in the sermon, but felt none of its powex.TiHe- chanced to look at his father and mother during the discourse, and was"' surprised to see them weeping., He could not im agine ivhy 'they, being Chr...
