GOOD MAN, SPARE THAT MULE. [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 8 September 1849

GOOD MAN, SPARE THAT MULE. PV STKTHEM C. MASt-KII Air — Woodman, spare that tree. Good man, spare that mule ! Don 't hit him on the raw, For if you harm him, you'll Regret it evermore. 'Twas my forefinger showed The path he oughter go, But he never saw the road He was so precious slow. That unfamiliar tree I tied him to so tight, Some fellows on a spree Had loos'd him in the night — He kicked, hehawed and cried, But 'twas of no avail, And so these wretches tied My ass up by the tail ! When a few idle boys Had seen the joke they played, They crept without much noise Behind the tree's cool shade ; Their mothers didn't know These naughty boys were out, And so with one fell blow They knocked his brains about ! My mule's cord round it clings, He cannot move a peg, And so one feller brings A rope to tie his leg : He gave his dying kick As they then tied the knot — Oh ! 'twas a cruel trick To axe him on the spot ! Later from Texas — Cholera among the Troops. — The following letter is from ...

This necessary step would have to be taken at some future day, and we think it evinced good judgment and foresight on the part of our City Council to commence the improvement thus early. Firearms —Our City Council should immediately pass an ordinance, making the discharge of firearms in our City an offence punishable with fine and imprisonment. Such a law is requisite to prevent the farther loss of life, as well as to keep the sick from being startled by these almost continuous reports. Health.— Without health all this turmoil and strife after gold amounts to nothing, and this being a ' fixed fact,' we shall volunteer a few words on the subject to the thoughtless and imprudent among our friends and ' fellow sufferers in this far off land.' Personal cleanliness does more to promote a healthy action of the system than, perhaps, all other means combined. A bath, to...
