A Model New Year's Address. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 February 1861

A Model New Year's Address. We liave read many New Year's Addresses, but one recently gotten up and published by the Oregon jlrgus, a Republican paper, heads oil' anything of the kind we have ever seen. The following extract is a fair sample of the entire 44 A "dress, *' which is quite lengthy. Abe Lincolu is represented as having made a New Year's call on the President, members of the Cabinet, Gen. I,ane and others. Having introduced himself, Mr. Lincoln proceeds to inform them that he has just leased the White House and w ill expect them to vacate the premises about the 4th of March, whereupon Gen. Lane is supposed to give vent to his *• pheliuks " in the following manner : Jo I-ane got up, and leaning on a chair. Clutched at his shirt, and tore his matted hair, Damn Oregon ! damn Pukedom, too," said he, 44 Damn all the States with constitutions free ! In Oregon, damn every whiffet whelp My gold has ever paid for me to yelp ! May I>olf and Slater, and each whining pup, ...

For Sale Low, to Close a Concern. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 February 1861

For Sale Low, to Close a Concern. The Goddess of Liberty, being about to retire fiom business, begs leave to offer the entire stock in trade of h«r establishment ffcr sale The goddess would offer, at the same time the • 4 good will " of the concern, but unhappily it is a long while since her once excellent supporters and customers have exhibited any good will towards her. The attention of distant nationalities, who may be thinking about a revolution—Hungarians, Poles, or Irishmen—is specinlly invited to this great sale. Among the articles for which she has no further use, and which will be disposed of, without reserve, to the highest bidder, are, the following materials in a slightly damaged condition : — Lot No I—Will comprise that most respectable fowl, the American Eagle, of the single-headed species, with his claws fu 11 of sheet lightning and thunderbolts. Warranted genuine. Any nation in need of an Emblem will be treated with one on the roost liberal terms. Lot No. 2—A fine as...

From the Boston I'ost. Crudities on the Constitution— The Difficulties that surround us. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 February 1861

From the Boston Post. Crudities on the Constitution— The Difficulties that surround us. Certain people of the North will insist that the United States Government is a military despotism, and that President Buchanan has all the powers of the Shah of Persia to seize and imprison and hang men at his pleasure. Thus the Republican presses are demanding of the President, that he shall seize the Commissioners from South Carolina, and try them for treason ! If you ask them what is treason they can't tell, but they insist the President ought to hang somebody, because Parton, in what he calls his " Life of Andrew Jackson," (compiled too much from street talk and newspaper slanders,) sets down that General Jackson proposed to hang Mr. Calhoun, for nullification, which is false. No citizen can be punished or deprived of life or liberty, in this country, without the process of law. Massachusetts and South Carolina are very much alike in their disturbance of this Union. They have done more to dis...

TWENTY CORDS of WOOD [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 February 1861

TWENTY CORDS of WOOD well seasoned, and packed up near the Court House, for sale at reasonable rates. Apply at this Office. Wood Chopping Match—A Match between two wood choppers came off near Princeton, on the ISth. for $60 00 a side, between a man named Crow, and another named Pikk. They chopped from 7 o'clock in the morning until 6 o'clock in the evening, when time was called, and it was found that Pike had cut cords of good cord wood; and Crow had cut 10 cords of wood, which was not received as cord wood, some of it being eight feet long. Who, Mr. Editor, wins? jf. Non conformity with the agreement in such cases, occasions the loss of the match. If it (the match) was to cut " cord wood,'' which is of specific length then the individual having the eight foot wood is loser. The statement that "Pike" cut nine and one-fourth cords of four foot wood in eleven hours we would inform our correspondent, is & pretty tough yarn. ♦ fr' &£*A distinguished San Francisco...
