I (Drijiital. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 25 May 1861

I (Drijiital. For the •« Journal." "They know not what they say." BT z. O! better 'twere to live in some lone cell, And breathe existence out from human ken, Than on this fair and lovely earth to dwell, , The sport of envy, and of malice fell, And be the victims of our fellow men— ' 'Tis base! 'tis ignoble to idly tell, With venom'd tongue the foibles of each other, i Frail members all of one great family, In charity and love—to step between And try cach other's frailty to screen. "For who can see the mote in his own eye?" Ah! better 'twere indeed to cease to be, Than live encircled 'round by calumny!

* John Dodge's First Trip to i Ginciinnati. ' [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 25 May 1861

* John Dodge's First Trip to i Ginciinnati. ' "What a marvelous change!" Ten , yearsago a traveler passed through that ipart of Indiana stretching along the lint | of thirty-nine degrees, North latitude, and looked, if not upon a vast wilderness, upon a region off ountry apparently so far behind the rest of the world. , that it would never catch up. Here and there amid the dense forests looked out little "clearings," not farms—patches only large enough to supply the immediate wants of those who claimed them, i Within the corners of said patches, stuck, as a general thing, insignificant, mud besmeared log huts, looking more like the abiding place of Brazil Indians,: than the homes of men who claimed tol be citizens of a prosperous and intelligent commonwealth. A short time since the same traveler had occasion tr> repeat his journey through Indiana, and I was honored with being his fellow.— At intervals, as we dashed along with 1 great rapidity, he looked from his cai windo...

Charge of the "Whisky Brigade." At the b*r, at the bar, At the bar thundered, Thundered with fiercest din. Topers one hundred. There stood these thirsty men, Thirsty one hundred; Calling for drinks in rain— The bar-keeper slumbered. Hark! there's n sound from one! Lis* how the cUrses come From each and every one Of that dry one hundred. Into the bar they pitched, Noble old topers; For up comes an order which Pleased the old soakers : "Forward the Rum Brigade! Take the bar!" Muggins said; Into it undismayed Pitched now each drunken blade— Bloated ones—one hundred. "Forward the Gin Brigade!" Gods! what a charge they mads! No man was there afraid No person blundered. Theirs, but to drink their fill Theirs, but to have a swill; Theirs, not to pay the bill; Oh! yes they know it well— Knowing one hundred! Bottles to the right of them, Bottles to the left of them. Bottles in front of them, Labelled and numbered; Nobly they fought, and well— There many a hero fell, Covered with blood and be...
