Apostrophe to the Sun. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 3 December 1859

Apostrophe to the Sun. PETER PICKELWORTH, ESQ. Writtten on reading an "Apostrophe to the Moon and Stars in the last issue of the Delta: O ! Thou eternal, big, almighty Sun; I never thonglit that any one would dare To treat thee with contempt as did the one That in the Delta wrote of Moon and Star, And spoke too of God's footstool, whereupon So many creeping, scribbling mortals are; And lest, O! Sol, thou should'st feel somewhat slighted. When Father Time first set his reel in motion. Out of respect to the Eternal's wiping, Thy vivid rays encircling Earth and "Ocean, Warmed into life the race of men and fishes, And then the more to earn man's chief devotion, Gave meats and herbs to form a thousand dishes, And threw materials in for wine and whiskey, Those things that make us feel so nice and frisky. Thou wcrt the chandelier for Eve and Adam, While on their uncooked food in Eden grazing, Long ere that ancient and .rebellions madam, Did eat, with impudence that seems amazing, The fruit...

Election of Senator. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 3 December 1859

Election of Senator. As the time is nigh at hand for the convening of the Legislature, it is becoming for us at this time to express our views upon one of the first and most important duties devolving upon that body; and we trust, as all who feel an interest in the welfare of our State, that this duty will be promptly and faithfully discharged. It is a well founded fact, that in the election of United States Senator the representatives of the people have manifested a desire for men, instead of a determination to elect, thereby procrastinating this important matter, greatly to the detriment of the State. The Democracy control that body, and upon their action in this matter much depends; therefore, it behooves them, at their caucus, to unite upon one man, and let it be such an one as is known to be honest and capable, by which course the result will be, not as has been the case in most instances heretofore, an entire defeat of any election, but a speedy termination of unnecessary extr...

The Fruits or Black Republicanism. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 3 December 1859

The Fruits or Black Republicanism. The troubles at Harper's Ferry have created barely less of a sensation in this State than in the States of Virginia and Maryland. There is no one conservative and rightthinking man but places the blame of this outrage and bloodshed where it belongslipon the head of the black republican party. Yet no one will pretend to say there is any direct participation in this affair by those who are the leaders and control the actions of that party. Undoubtedly the sympathies of a large number of that organization are with "Old Brown," and perhaps secretly, natty of their members gave him countenance and aid. Those, whoever they were, are now silent. The universal condemnation of his acts has so alarmed them that not even can poor old Brown find any one bold enough to ask that mercy should be shown him. The republican newspapers stoutly deny that the sympathies of their party are with the traitors, and emphatically protest that the doctrines enunciated by thei...

The United States and Nicaragua.— The following letter is from the late United Status Minister to Nicaragua, Gen. Lamar, and gives a very satisfactory account of the relations existing between the two countries: Galveston, Oct. 2, 1859. GENTLEMEN :—ln reply to your inquiries, I am happy to state that a treaty between the United States and Nicaragua has been ratified by the latter Government, and is acceptable to ours, by which the door to peaceful and friendly emigration to Nicaragua is opened to Americans. This-treaty has laid the foundation lor a return of confidence between the Governments ; it is ample in all its provisions for the protection of our citizens, in life, properly and religion; it is made in good faith on the part of Nicaragua, and if violated by her can be enforced by our Government, without hazarding the respect of other nations. Should any inconsiderate citizens of ours forego their nationality, by marauding upon a Government which is now in good relations with o...

The Organ of Gov. Wise on Executive Clemency—Brown to be Hung. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 3 December 1859

The Organ of Gov. Wise on Executive Clemency—Brown to be Hung. The Richmond Enquirer, the principal editor of which is the son of Gov. Wise, has an article on Executive clemency, from which we gather that the chances of Brown for a pardon arc not very brilliant. We quote passages; "A st'GtiESTION FOB GOVERNOR WISE."' Under this head, the Now York Commercial Advertiser, a Black Republican Frccsoil sheet, puts forth an argument to show that Browm is an "ultra fanatic," "little better than insane," "with mind and heart alike too warped for him to discern evil from good." Under these circumstances, the Advertiser argues that it would not be good policy for Virginia to hang Brown and his fellow-murderers. • • • • * • • In replying to such a "suggestion" as the New York Advertiser makes to Gov. Wise, we do not wish to be understood as implying the existence of any reason therein. We notice for other purposes. We desire to call the attention of the Advertiser, and others of thejNorthern pr...
