4. - 4 In the days of King John " trials by ordeal" gave place to trials by jury. I have often in my day bad occasion to remark tbat little was gained by the change. I long since came to the conclusion that if I were unfortunate enough to be ti led by a "jury," for any crime or misdemeanor, I would as soon "flit the copper," and cry "heads I win, tails I loose," as run tbe risk of having justice done me by a dozen men, who are geuerally swayed iu their opinious by one or two of their number. If men of sense and judgment were the only ones jm- panneled to try cases, the jury ay stem of the present day might perhaps answer the demands of justice; but such i* not the case generally; on the contrary, let a p*r- son of discrimination look into our courts, and follow the juries int.> the jury rooms, and he will see that in a great majority of instances instead of finding bis peers, he will do well if be finds men with senso enough to diftinguieh right from wrong in the most ordinary tr...
