Bscreen incredible opulence of the places the wealthy lived, worked and played. Among them is the Coconut Grove, where at different times the singers are all in the Wainwright family: daddy Loudon and siblings Rufiis and Martha. Stunt casting includes cameos by Jude Law as Errol Flynn and Gwen Stefani, whose less successful appearance as Jean Harlow seems to have been cut to the bare minimum. Although John Logan's screenplay makes good choices of what to include to give an over- all impression of Hughes' life, plus interesting trivia about him, Logan and Scorsese botch the film's tone. By selecting the right scenes, you can make a strong case that "The Aviator" is a drama about Hughes, a comedy about him or a satire that mocks him. Flying is commonly used as a metaphor for freedom or something else in the movies. In "The Aviator," flying is a metaphor for flying. That kind of thinking keeps it from soaring very high. STUNT-CASTING ALERT: Look for Rufus Wainwright singing at the Coco...

While rugby is known for grueling action on the playing field, members of the 23 clubs that form the International Gay Rugby Association & Board (IGRAB) enjoy camaraderie with equal intensity. For Casey Ryan, president of the Philadelphia Gryphons, rugby's European roots interested the Irish-American. After co-founding the Gryphons in 2002, his club membership has grown from 10 to 50 players. A sense of serious athleticism attracted players to the Gryphons, Ryan says. says that in the U.S, all rugby teams must belong to USA Rugby and to their local union (confer- ence). "Within a union, there are different divisions, just like in N( AA football Division I being the hardest (most competitive), and Division III being the newest and least experienced teams," Sloan says. "Unlike Softball or other sports, we play 'straight' teams.' The only time we play other gay teams is if they happen to be in our union or at special events put on to invite IGRAB teams." The 2006 Bingham Cup, to be hosted by New York's Gotham Knights, will take precedence over Gay Games VII that year. (Montreal's OutGames has not planned rugby events.) "We would like to see those venues include a rugby festival event focused on individual play- ers who sign up and are assigned to teams, rather than a city-based team tournament," says the Fog's DuBois. Since both the Bingham Cup and Gay Games VII will be held in the United States, Ryan says the Gryphons may send a contingent to both ...

PBS series of the same name and develops it into a broader landscape. Meanwhile, aficionados in search of never- before-seen photos and controversial "best musi- cal" choices will flock to Ken Bloom and Frank Vlastnick's "Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time" (Black Dog & Leventhal). At $34.95, it's a bargain almost impossible to pass up. Ethan Mordden con- cludes his critique of American musical the- atre in "The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen: The Last 25 Years of Broadway Musical" (Palgrave Macmillan, $26.95), in which he finds the genre sorely wanting. While not the most structured of analy- ses, it brims with Mordden's brilliant, searing wit as he rails against the musical's apparent decline. And fans of the author of "Hello Dolly!" and "Maine" will enjoy Stephen Citron's "Jerry Herman: Poet of the Showtune" (Yale University Press, $30).
