TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. Get in Line for the New Year's Ball—It's a Go! Mr. Reeves has met with many assurances of co-operation in making the proposed New Year's ball a success. Numerous in- quiries have been made concerning it, and genuine interest is being manifested by the young folks—and the more fortunate, married folks, too. Already some of the ladies have placed their order for dresses, and Mr. Cook says others have inspected his line of dress goods with a view of placing an order if the ball was a sure thing. Well, it's a "go," if those who have spoken favorably of it mean business. With a view to ascertaining just how sincere they are, Mr. Reaves authorizes a call for a meeting tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the office of The Texas Mining and Trade Journal tor the purpose of discuss- ing ways and means, and arriving at a conclusion agreeable to the majority. Get together once more! Get some of the old- time enthusiasm and work-togetherativeness. Let the ...

The famous Carter case may again spring into prominence through means of a Congressional investigation, which may in- volve those with whom it was alleged that Captain Carter had dealings. It was charged at the court-martial which convicted Captain Carter that he had entered into a conspiracy, or con- spiraces, with certain companies to rob the Government. 8 TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. FLASHES OF THOUGHT. by professor d. s. landis, OPPORTUNITY. Arise and touch her garment hem, nor wait; She passes once, and lays the scroll at door Of each, and waits a time, and names the lore, Then hurries on, but seals each crystal gate; But asks a crown, and worlds will give estate; But asks a beggar's bow], the gift no more; So kiss her lips, and pluck the yellow ore From life, and ply the pearly ores of fate. The Kings have known her, Sonor is her maid; Her smile is caught by the bright eyes of fame, and poets call her name, and make their vow; But should she pass, but follow not, dark shade Is on thy dome of life; go hide the shame The tardy soul has set upon its brow. TWO WORSHIPPERS. Feet there be that seek no shrine Where pompous man has built; And hearts there be that drink the wine That we condemn in baser guilt. Lips that tremble, never pray, Hearts that o'erflow with love— That nobly serve and hide away, And fearing naught but eyes abo...
