Intercolonial Mining [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 28 January 1898

Last year 203,208oz of gold were won in Bendigo. The value of gold and silver produced in the Australian colonies during 1897 is estimated at £12,000,000, The recent heavy rains have given abundance of water for all purposes at Wattle Flat, and ail the batteries are either crushing or preparing to start, The late rain has had the effect of filling the exhausted dams at Mt. McDonald, and the Balmoral battery is now once more hard at work reduc ing, ore. More men have been put on at the: mines, and the number will be still further increased ere long it is thought. The prospects of the field are much brighter now they have been for a very long time. Woman's World. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 28 January 1898

ill's Worli [By " Melita.5'] Daring these hot day& one's mind does not dwell on balls and bail dresses, but, ^though we may not be indulging in this pastime just now, we may be preparing a gown for she forthcoming season. The prettiest ball dresses are so sicopl8 that one can hardly describe them, for tbere^ 19 really no detail about theui. ihe effectiveness depends entirely on their charming lines and combination of colours. You cannot go wrong in placing flowers about a gown, on the shoulders and up one side of the skirt. Then, too, a delightful finish comes to us from Paris, of placing a garland of roses round the chignon, and catching it with an extra bunch at the Bide. Sleeyes on ball dresses are very often an after-thought, and are more often not thought of at all. Jewelled bands take their place, a small ruffle or two of tulle, or two little puffs, or any airy fairy descrip tion of that nature, Black will be the leading colour ; it has field sway both in England and P...

Current Jottings. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 28 January 1898

The glorious cause of Federation is in a painfully inglorious position just at present, and grave fears are entertained that it will grow much worse before it bas a chance to grow much better. In spite of all the efforts made by the few good men who are really in earnest over the matter, that peculiar organ known as " the great heart of the people," refuses to throb a jot faster when Federation is men tioned, and the majority of the men of Australia seem to take no more interest; in the movement than they would of a draper's ad vertisement, respecting bargain sai.5$ and tiie great benefit to be derived from an early rush to the " remnant" counters. The holi days and the cricket matches may have something to do with this •unpatriotic coolness, but I fear that, the bulk of the people are not yet fully educated upon the subject ox Federation, and there fore She idea of taking a plebiscite on it is anything but desirable. Taking the opinion of a man on a matter concerning which he has l...

ORANGE. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 28 January 1898

O R A N G E. An old identity, Mr. James Skelly, is dead. On the representations of Mr. Newman M.P. the Deputy-Registrar at Lucknow (Mr. James Blunt) has been instructed to extend the hour for issuing electors' rights from 3 to 6 p.m. At present the hours of all the registrars (unless otherwise or dered) are from 10 till 3. There i& bIbo a deputy-registrar at Forest Reefs (Mr. Halley). On Monday morniDg five names were placed on the monthly provisional roll. A sad case of destitution was under notice on Friday. It was that of a poor woman, camped on the bank of the creek at the south-western extremity of the town, giving birth to a child on Monday morning last. It appears her haBband, who is a hawker, was away at the time. The only shelter the poor woman had wcs a few old bags round a cart under which she was lying. Mrs. Lindsay hearing of the sad case had the woman taken to her house, where a room was placed at her disposal and every kindness and attention be&towed.<...

Dandaloo. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 28 January 1898

(from our own correspondent.) The weather baB settled down once again to the customary thing : hot close days, with a reliever now and again m the shape of a cool breeze blowing. One or two days during the week were very hot, notably Wed nesday last, when the glass regis tered considerably over the century in the shade: Jt made me think of what " Will Honeycomb" once wrote of a distinguished visitor to Dubbo, saying of that town, He thought that Dubbo was only separated by a . thin sheet of tissue paper from the u Inferno" regions. There is no doubt that Dubbo is a very hot place, considering the mountainous coaatry .that encircles it; but I am afraid if that distinguished visitor had ex tended his visit further west", say to Nevertire or Dandaloo, while crossing ..some of the plainy country, he would have doubted even tbe existence of the paper. Although the tempera ture recorded at Dandaloo is not cuany degrees hottpr than Dubbo, the open nature* of the country, and dusty !. roads...
