The Guardian. PUBLISHED SATURDAY MORNINGS. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1898. WHAT BRITISH CONTROL MEANS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

PUBLISIED SATURDAY MORNINGS. SA TURDA Y, NOVEMBER 19, 1898. WHA'? BRITISH CONTROL MEA %S. FEw are the conquered races that have fallen bleneath the sway of Great Bri tian that have not reason to bless thp day that such a change in their natiional life took place. It means to them all the blessings of civilisation-justice, prosperity, domestic comfort and happi ness, respect for life and property, liberty, protection from powerful and bloodthirsty foes, &c.-in the place of barbarism with all its concomitant hor rors and contempt for the rights and liberties of subjects. The recent con quest of the Soudan supplies the latest illustration of this. But a few brief weeks since the Soudanese were exposed to a tyranny, the horrors of which it were almost impossible to exaggerate. They were completely at the mercy of an unprincipled, blood thirsty, blasphemous dehauchee. To day almost before the blood of the slain combatants has dried on the battle field, and while the streets of Kh...

HEALESVILLE HARMONIC SOCIETY. "THE HAYMAKERS." [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

11EALENVILLE HARn?ONIC SOCIETY. " THE HAYM AKERS." The second concert of the above society was held in Daly's Hall on Tuesday evening last, and justly ful filled the highest anticipations of merit and excellence, and the critique of the audience was demonstrated by the omanifestations of approval which greeted the performers in their indi vidual and combined efforts. Perhaps the only defect which needs mention was the weakness of the male voices in their solo parts, and this was more so observable from the fact that the lady singers were in exceptionally good voice, but this fault was in the major part relieved by the richness of the choruses, and these were, without doubt, the par excellence of the even ing's entertainment. Set to beautiful music, the various choruses were ren dered in a manner which would have well satisfied even the composer, for every little detail was carried out to the letter; perfection of rhythm, and richness and crispness of tone, were ,tru.t r, ,~dmi nant ...

HEALESVILLE TURF CLUB. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

HIEALESVILLE TUIRF CLUB. tl Any doubts which may have existed relative to the racing fixture on New Year's Day being allowed to lapse, were dispelled on Monday evening last, when some 20 or more gentlemen c' attended the advertised meeting for ti the purpose of considering what was ti to be done towards furthering the pro jected movement. In some quarters tl an abortive attempt has been made to w belittle the body, but it is satisfactory ti to know that the effort was fruitless, (1 and everything now tends towards a tj successful day's meeting. As the hall could not be secured for that evening, ti, owing to the Harmonic Society re- ti quiring it for the purpose of rehearsal, the meeting was held in the bank pre- at raises, adjoining Matthews' shop. al Mr. Matthews was voted to. the bE chair. He remarked that it gave him great pleasure to see so many present, se as it was proof that all interest had se not yet been lost in the New Year's i m Day races. It had been a difficult matter ...

YARRA GLEN SPORTS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

YARRA GLEN SPORTS. The Loyal Yering Lodge, in ccnjunc- th tion with the Yarra Glen Hunt Club, held a variety sports meeting on Wed-. a nesday week last on the picturesque Ic racecourse at Yarra Glen, and though fe the day was unsuited for such a gather- p in , everything passed off most success fu ly. The morning train from Heales- t ville took with it a very large number b1 of visitors, and a good crowd also e' proceeded by vehicles and other forms th of transport. Long before the time arrived for starting the initial event, a large attendance was present from all J around the district, and much interest se was evinced in the general bill of fare 2f provided for the day. The manage ment of the sports was conducted in n' worthy fashion by those gentlemen G who officiated as sponsors to the move- T ment, and they deserve great praise for the energy and zeal they infused sl into their work of seeing that the dif- m ferent events were arranged so as to al allow no flagging whatever to ...

VICTORIAN MOUNT MORGAN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

VICTORIAN EBUINT ORGtAN. [From the " Mining Standard.'] A most satisfactory report has been received from the manager of the Victorian Mount Morgan G.M. Go., Cairnsville, near Marysville (V), which it is claimed sets at rest all doubts as to the success of the cyanide treatment there adopted. A trial test has been made of 15 tons from lo. I vat. The ore crushed was from the open cut, 60 feet wide, and 20 feet deep, the result being 4oz. 2dwt 12gr gold, value £16 10s. It is estimated that ldwt. perton represents the non-extraction. The above gives an average of 5dwt 12gr. per ton, and, as the cost of cyaniding is only Is per ton, the return is an ex cellent one. The mining manager further reports having struck splendid gold in shaft at a depth of 120 feet. The formation is described by the chair man and managing director, Mr. E. M. Oairns, as a volcanic and hydro thermal dyke in which the sandstone is the gold-bearing rock, it being the chief absorbentrock of thehydrothermal waters w...

PERTINENT PARS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 26 November 1898

PERTINENT PARS. . [BY HAWK-EYE.] Scotchmen and humor are indisso lubly associated, all the alleged jokers to the contrary notwithstanding. It has become the fashion for many years for the poor wits to. exercise their limited powers on the men ayout the Tweed, who are unpopularly supposed to require the assistance of a cold chisel and a sledge hammer in order to insert a joke into their craniums. I have been among Scothrlnen all my life, and am prepared to backth'eaver-: age man of that nation for keen "ap preciation of and ability to make a joke. One of the wittiest of plat form speakers is the youthful Mr.. Hume Cook, M.L.A., and he is never better than when telling Scotch stories.: This reminds ome of a.yarn I heard not so long:since, and as I'have not heard a; repetition of it, it is--worth-, hearing. A raw-boned, thick-speaking specimen of humanity, rejoicing in the name of Malcolm M'Allister, went to a, registry: office fodr some, purpose and 'was asked his nationality. " A'am a...
