Water Main Bursts Mount's Bay Road Incident EXTENSIVE DAMAGE Perth, This Afternoon. [Newspaper Article] — Geraldton Guardian — 17 January 1948

Water Main Bursts Mount's Bay Road Incident EXTENSIVE DAMAGE Perth, This Afternoon. When a six-inch water pipe burst at the corner' of Mount's Bay R«;ad and Spring Street about 3 a.m. to-day it unleashed thousands of gallons of water. Boosted by a pressure of 1251b. to the square inch the water tore a hole five feet deep and about six yards wide in the roadway, hurled sand from the hole over an area of about twenty yards wide, completely undermined fifty feet or more of Mount's Bay Uoad, damaged a gas filter and strained underground telephone cabJes. Water Supply maintenance crews worked fast to provide a temporary main for householders in Mount's Bay Road and Malcolm Street. A few houses along Mount's Bay Road went without water until about 11 a.m. when the pipe was repaired. The loca tion of the break was only about thirty feet off the 30-inch Canning Dam main that feeds the Mount Eliza Reservoir. Maintenance men arrived at 3.30 a.m. and made temporary blocks on either side of the...

District Coal Seams Disappointment Over Eradu MIDLAND DEPOSITS An estimate of about £100,000 for the removal of sufficient of the overburden to permit of the economical working of the Eradu coal seam by open-cut methods was supplied to the directors or Kradu Coal Limited at a meeting held in the oilk-e of the secretary (Mr. C. V. Cavanagh) on Wednesday. Under the direction of the Mines Department Mr. Morrow recently completed the syiktng- of a shaft on to the seam and after the disappointing results obtain ed from tests made of the coal he is now engaged in dismantling the plant used in connection with the operation. Questioned regarding possible mining costs at Eradu Mr. Morrow said that if the coal could be mined on a large scale the costs could be kept within reason, but on any small scale mining costs would be prohibitive. The over burden would outweigh the coal in the proportion' of seven to one. which was rather considerable. However, if the coal could be handled in a big way ...

When the strained relations existing between the Soviet Union and the other great countries are remembered, how ever, together with the little war in progress in several parts of the world, plus the inflated cost of everything in America, it does . not appear to be excessive. The President in the course of his message to the legislature, said that ''the plain fact is that our Budget must remain high until we have mot oUr international responsibilities and can see the way clear to a peaceful and prosperous world.' That is a dictum with -which it is hard to quarrel; and as nobody in America is keener tban the Republicans on the need for safe guarding the security of their home !and*ilk ^jH lw-t be surnrising if t...
