TO CONTRIBUTORS. [Newspaper Article] — The Central Queensland Herald — 2 January 1930

TO CONTRIBUTORS. It it hoped to retain the tame association with contributors in the j 'Herald' at characterised the relations between them and the bearers ' and reviewer for the ' Cap.' As the man said when interrogated over cutting off his boy's head; to cure him of squinting, ' There were faults on both sides,' and if the industry of the bearers ultimately prevailed over that of contributors they — the bearers — can thank their favoured position for the circumstance. However, so that contributors shall not feel strange in their new surroundings, the services of the bearers have been retained for the 'Herald.' The present occasion seems to offer a good excuse for tendering : advice to contributors, and the following might be cut out and pasted ' handy for ready reference : — I 1. Write clearly, use wide margins, and give yourself plentv of room, j If the typewriter is used, do nothing less than double spacing. ' There is ! a whole sermon in this, but perhaps the strongest argument...

AROUND THE TOWN WITH ROD AND GUN [Newspaper Article] — The Central Queensland Herald — 2 January 1930

[?] . AH. good morrow cvevyboiiv. v A pros ? No, I don't think it's much good pulling that stuff at this stage. Seasonal wishes, like good advice, have no commercial value at this time of vear. How do you like our page , heading? It was I drawn for me by an artist friend. I should ha\c been able to draw it myself. You see I've done a good deal of drawing from time to time. For instance, I served quite an apprenticeship at drawing corks — I think I should be classed ?.s a journeyman. No one has been able to point the finger of scorn when it comes to drawing a salary. Sometimes I have been accused of drawing the long bow. That's me with the fishing rod. I den't know who the gent, with the gun happens to be, unless it is the girl's father, or 'Battler' going out 'pessuming, or a very annoyed country reader who has failed to find the quote for sorghum in the market report. Whoever he is, he means business, and ff he is fter the lad with the fish ing red, I hope he'll use blank cart ridg...

TARGINNIE. [Newspaper Article] — The Central Queensland Herald — 2 January 1930

TARGINNIE. On- the 19th inst, we had a severe windstorm, says our Targinnie corres pondent. About half-an-inch of rain was recorded. On the 21st inst. we bad a genuine cyclone* The wind came through a narrow pass in the mountains, through which the road runs to Mt. Lar com, and as the storm rapidly approach ed the peculiar greenish tinge in the sky was a signal to fasten everything down. The wind lasted about half -an -hour, the centre of the cyclone appeared to pass! over the writer's property. It was un- i doubledly the wbrit windstorm experi- ' enced here for a long time. The roads are everywhere blocked with fallen tim ber, and in some cases fences are smash ed in all directions. It is rather sur- : prising1 to say that no dwellings were unroofed. , It was, ; howeverj a particu larly sever test of the stability of the ' various houses, huts, and other dwell ing places of the Targinnie settlers. Eighty-five points of rain fell, and Jt was very welcome, .especially as several bush...
