Our English letter. May 17th, 1876. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 29 July 1876

Our English letter. May 17th, 1876. The Queen has returned from her Conti nental trip, and has since entertained her Imperial Majesty the German Empress, and other notables. The Empress Augusta is said to have spent a most pleasant time here. Shortly after her departure, the ex-Kin? nf Hanover and family arrived. He still con siders himself king, and it is because I10 is so obstinate the German Government refuses to hand over his immense personal property. The Empress Eugenie and Prince Imperial have likewise visited the Queen, and later in the season the King and Queen of Greece are expected. The Prince of Wales is home again. Ho was met off the Isle of 'Wight by the Princess of Wales and children. He landed at Portsmouth, and botli in that town and in London he was hailed with extra ordinary demonstrations of loyal enthusiasm. He is looking very well after his wanderings, and has expressed his belief that he will be bettor for what he has seen and learned. On reaching London lie a...

FAREWELL BANQUET TO MR. W. H. J. SLEE. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 29 July 1876

FAREWELL BANQUET TO MR.' W. H. ! J. SLEE. (Communicated. ) A farewell banquet was given to Mr. W. H. J. Slee, in the Masonic Hall, on Monday even ing last, by the Masonic body of Lodge St. Andrew, Grenfell, it being impossible to notice the departure of that gentleman without feeling regret, ho having been so long amongst us and always deservedly called a true neighbour, a charitable friend, and a strong supporter of our township. The only hope is, as I10 has gone, that he may always have as many (or more if possible) friends as Grenfell can give him. The entertainment was given under the friendly feeling of tho Masonic brethren. The dinner was nrenared in the usuallv first-class style of Bro. Joseph Rich — it need only to be said that all were appetized, none dissatisfied. After discussing amply the good things pro vided, the usual Masonic toasts were drunk and the general toast — the health of Bro. W.S. Sleo — was proposed by the R.W.M. , Bro. J. Q. Wood, who eulogised at great le...

THE CHAMPION BOAT RACE. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 29 July 1876

THE CHAMPION BOAT RACE. In addition to our paragraph of last issue, in which we mentioned the excitement in Sydney consequent upon the news of Trickett's victory, we learn that it was a magnificent contest, both men keeping well together until the last quarter of a mile, when Tricket put on a tremendous spurt and won by four lengths. Steps have been initiated to present Trickett with a testi monial upon his return to Sydney, to take the form most probably of a purse of sovereigns, and a considerable sum has already been sub scribed. At a meeting of tho Committee ap pointed to carry out that object, offers were received from an amateur dramatic club and from several professional companies to give en tertainments in aid of the fund, but the offers were declined. Mr. Driver was to move in the Assembly on Tuesday next, — ' 1. That the im portant service rendered by Mr. Edward Trickett, and that the benefits likely to accrue to the colony from liis visit to the mother country, are fully ...

Commercial. SYDNEY. MORT AND CO.'S REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 29 July 1876

Commercial. SYDNEY. Mout and Co.'s Report. Wool : The sales passed off very quietly this week. The few lots offered were of an unattrac tive character, and tho sales made afford very little criterion of tho effect on this market of late English advices. Recent telegrams name the decline, as compared with values of previous series, at 2id to 3d per lb. for washed and scoured, and 2d on groasy, tho heaviest fall being on medium and inferior descriptions. The few lots sold by us realized 12-Sd to 17d for fleece, and Cd to 8Ad for greasy. Sheep skins were more dull of salo than last week, owing, no doubt, to the depressed condition of the wool market, together with tlie un settled state of the weather interfering with nnafnl-Cnn.. HARRISON, JONES, & DEVLIN'S REPORT [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 29 July 1876

Harbison, Jones, & Devlin's Report wool : me intelligence which has reached us of the condition of the London markets has certainly damped the sales here, the latest information confirming the previous report of a fall in the value of wool at the June series of sales in London 0f 15 to 20 per cent. The sales hore this week were consequently of so little importance that we refrain from recording them here, and merely quote the averages attained by the different classes of wool at the sales, namely— fleece, lid to 17d ; greasy, 4J-d to 8id ; scoured and handwashed, 11; d to 13d. Sheepskins : The sales of this week were singu larly dull, business being with great difficulty effected, no doubt caused by the unfavourable English wool news. The sales ranged for best skins, 5d to 6|d ; medium, 3fd to 4Ad ; pelts and short wool, 2d to 3d ; Tallow : Tallow was in very short supply, although there are this ?week several shipping buyers in the market. Tallow, suitable for shipment are ...
