WANTED,—AN AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTOR. [TO THE EDITOR.] [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 15 July 1897

WANTED,-AN AGRICULTURAL r «V-*-- INSTRUCTOR; [To THE EDITOR.] Sir,-Thinking it would not be out of place or time to materialize the idea of a local practical agriculturist, I would esteem it a favor if you would kindly publish the following:-Having seen in the report of the Gatton Conference that the Minister of Agriculture said he was in favour of starting three experimental cane nurseries, I was pleased enough. This is right and a step in the proper direction, if well carried out, with both scientific and practical men in charge. | But from the point of view of a local agriculturist,'what would be of'inestim- able good to the "district'of Cairns would be a travelling instructor, well versed in all branchas of agriculture.suited to the district, and with knowledge of prevail- ing conditions, and who would visit all selectors, give them the benefit of his knowledge and sdvise, them .of, an/ mis- takes he saw .in' theirt Bald,'.ofehaid, or plantation work. VISITORS TO BARRON MEAT WORKS. [TO THE EDITOR "POST."] [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 15 July 1897

VISITORS TO BARRON MEAT WORKS. [To THE EDITOR "POST."] Sir,-I would crave space in the columns of your valued journal for just a line to remind a small section of the general public that a Factory is not a 4 public place' (within the meaning of the Act) but the private property of a firm or company, and that it ia just as much a necessary act of courtesy on the part of would-be visitors to apprise the manager of their wish to view a Works,' and obtain his permission before making the place their own, as it is to knock or ring at their neighbor's door and await its open- ing before marching into his house. 1 do not think any right-thinking people will need a second reminder on this point, or fail to see that it is not only right but necessary that a manager should know what manner of persons may from time to time be prowling around, lest the acts of the irresponsible may be wrongly at- tributed to the respectable -and for other reasons which need not ' here ' > be enumerated. LOOKING FROM THE LONELY ROCK. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 15 July 1897

LOOKING FROM THE LONELY ROCK. THE island of St. Paul is merely .1 great rock in the Southern Ocean, it is the top of a volcanic mountain. There are no means of sustaining life to be found on it. The nearest inhabited) land is Australia or Africa. To that ugly and desolate refuge came a'boat'containing nine persons-two of them women., They had food-011 shurt allowance, for perhaps a. week. In less than three days they were half insane from anxiety. Water, water, ' water everywhere,' but no help. On the fifth day, at dawn, a brig hove to off the island. They saw her. Shouting, I praying, weeping, they stumbled to the beach, and were rescued. - It was «ne ohnncn' ina hundred. - I'll' tell yon « HY ?onie other time. But, nias ! isn't it as,bad or even worse on land ? Look at the physical wrecks in homes, in hospitals, and answer me. One peiishes of privation from shipwreck. A thousand perish of privation in the midst of plenty. It isn't food they long for, but POWER TO USE IT-worst and ...

QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, Wed. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 15 July 1897

QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, Weil. A large additional territory has been annexed in the Solomon Islands hy the English Government, and, although no details are to hand fiom tho captain of H.M.S. '. Wallaroo" it would appear that neaily all the islands south of the line of demarci tion between German and English possessions in this group, have been formally annexed. Seveial prospect- ing expeditions are either setting out for, or have set out for the Solomons, and it is believed that gold, antimony, and silver exist in the group in payable quantities. . With reference to the asset tion that ? a Land Grant Railway Syndicate-has been formed in England to construct a line from Normanton to Cloncuiry on terms sipnlar tD those offered by ¡Sir * Thomas Mell wraith, 'the members of the Government are very teticent about the matter, but it is generally understood that they ure not prepared at the present time to , favorably consider any such proposals.
