THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 19 August 1858

THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DBAYTON, TUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1858. As considerable misapprehension appears to pre- vail regarding the presumed rights of owners of stock to depasture their cattle on the unalienated Crown Lands in the vicinity of the town, we shall devote all our available space in this day's   paper to the subject, with the view disahes-   ing the minds of many persons, who seem to imagine that that they have been hardly dealt with in having their cattle, found trespassing on the neighbouring stations, both below and above the Main Range, impounded by the occupiers thereof. We are not aware that the Government has allotted any space around either Drayton or   Toowoomba for a public commom beyond the present town reserve of 25 square miles, con- sequently, the inhabitants are not in a position to   maintain the rights of commonage, for these rights have neither been granted nor defined by the Executive. In point of fact, ...

VARIETIES. ComiGB op Despair, — Men forced to b*til« against their intention often conquer beyond thrir expectation. Stop a flying coward and he will turn his legs into arms and lay about him ram fully ; whereas open him a passage U escape, and he will quickly shut up bis courage. — Fuller. Tub Hoad Dohn IUix. — All vice stands upon a precipice. To engage in any sinful coarss is to run down tho lull. If we once let loose thst propensities of nature, we cannot gather in the reins, and govern them as we please ; it it muck easier not to begin a bad course than to atop when begun — TUlotton. Eloquence is not in the words, batin tlie subject; and in great concerns, the more simply anything ds expressed, it m generally more sublime. Tros eloquence docs not consist in. as the rhetoricians iissure us, io saying great thiogs in sublime style, the sublimity lies only in the things ; and when they are not eo, the language may be torgid, affected, metaphorical, but not affecting. — Go.d- r.nit...
