LEGUMES AS FARM CROPS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 24 July 1914

LEGUMES AS FARM CROPS. (By Charles F. Cass, in "Kimball's Dairy Farmer.") Practical farmers gejierally-: notice that their cultivated crops, as. maize, .tbbacco, br ..potatoes, do best when grown where a good clover sod-was ploughed under.' Centuries- ago, the best farmers in Europe recognised the value of the legumes. The Greeks and Romans grew vetch and lucerne --or medicda, as it was then called. This name, "Medica," was given to lucerne because it seemed to Improve the soil and was such a good feed for the stock that they considered it as a medicine. Clover was one of the main crops in the Norfolk rotation, which proved so valuable in the agri cultural development of England in the early part of the eighteenth cen tury. Soy beans are natives of China 'and Japan, where they have been grown for centuries. There they'are .valued as food, as a soil improver, and as feed for stock. Thus, the "legumes are not a newly developed species of plants, but have been grown for many years and ...

THE NEW WHITE PIG. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 24 July 1914

THE NEW WHITE PIG. It is difficult to believe that the now famous white pigs whicn, represented by ,he.large valreby, are found a~ over nfl world, were the creation of a X urk lure weaver but 114le more than sixty years ago. S~tul more diticuit is it to recognise that before its appear ance au tne Royal in 1851 fthere was practically no British breed of pigs at all. It is true that there are types ~which were found in different, coun tries, like the early Berkshires; but in the modern sense of the world there was no standard, and the pig popula tion was bus emerging from a stae of barbarity, their ancestors of fifty years before naying been to a large extent kept in droves and allowed io run wild. There were white pigs of great size in The North which were slow in growth, long in body, head and legs, llau in the side, coarse in the hair; full of activity, prolific and hardy, but poor producers of meat, which was too lean, and when ready to kill wanting in that tenderness which chara...
