1i' is true, we suppose, tlshat people may get sccustonmed to anything, and perhaps reconu ciled to anythisg ; and a belief in this tenet oseems necessary towards accounting for the apathy with which thet people of tho unlucky borough of Kiaum nppear to regard the state of paralysis in which their Isunici pality lies foundered, A tacit; confession of utter helplessness seems to be the only €x proession, if such it may he called, of the mind of the ratepayers in relation to tlhe state of their corporate affairs. We cer tainly cannot undertake, nor do we think there is anybody who could or would under take to point out any royal road to the restoration of life and activity in the body corporato; but the( inlconvenience, the dis grace, the ridiculo attaching to the present state of affiirs might be considered--unless people are indifi'erent to all these things to be sullicient to incite persons to some sort of activity, if only tlhe activity of ldespera. tion in order to bring albout so...

CURIOSITIES OF TAXATION. I. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 17 September 1887

CURIOSITIfS OF TAXATION. (Fromn All the Year Round.) I. TIJEIR is no doubt, even to this day, some thing distasteful about the word taxation, and the fount of human kindness seems in. continently to dry up whenever a taxgather heaves in sight. All recognise taxes to be indispensibleo to our comfort and safety as citizons, but we do not love them ; we admit that the taxgather is a necessary evil, but most of us, would always rather have hirs room than his company. Would taxes be a.ny more pleasant or easier to pay if we called them benefactions, or subscriptions, or contributions I It is more tlhan doubtful; but, at the same timle, let it not be forgotten that it has boon contended that the severaneoo of the American colonies from the mother country would never havo occurred had our statesmen been diplomatic enough to style tile obnoxious dues " regulations " instead of taxation. There is, no doqubt, a good deal in a name, and if, as Woods says, Eastern potentates prefer to call the ...

The balance sheet of the club is in rather a favourable condition, but as a lot of new material is wanted, a move'ment is on foot to arrange for a promenade concert if possible. The secretary has been in communication with Mlr. Fairland, secretary to the Associa. tion Ground Sydney, who is bringing a te...

VA R I I T ES Last winter it is said that a cow floated down the Volga river on a piece of ice, aitl caught such a cold that she has yielded noth. ing but icooream ever since. Stockton teacher to boy in grammar class: "John,. correct the following sentence : It are very cold." John, as he wipes the perspi. ration from his fore.head with his shirt sleeve: "It are thundering hot." For two hours a fashionable lady kept the draper exhibiting his goods, and at thle end of that period slhe sweetly asked, "Are you sure you have shown me every thing you have I" "No, madam," said the draper, "I have yet an old account in my ledger I'll gladly show you." IHe did not need to show any more. The Queen of Roumnania and her singing. -Queen Elizabeth of Roumania devoted such a large amount of time to singing that her attendants lately assured her that her voice entitled her to rank with the most cele brated of singers. THE LONDON COSTERMONGER. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 17 September 1887

. THE LONTDON' COSTEMONGE. A WRITEn ina London Magazine says : I find the present generation of London costers, as a ruIe, to the manner, or, perhaps I should say, to the street and barrow born. It is rarely a man thus born, and who has carried a "shallow " (a flat basket), or push ed a barrow from boyhood, over gets out of the business. Ho may rise into a green grocer, a coal shed, a fried fish shop, or even a bacon and butter establishment, by dint of great industry, but this is a dizzy eminence which few costers attain, and of which the majority do not dream, He is indeed fortunate if, after a busy life of almost ceaseless toil, he can gazo upon, as his own, a faithful diminutive ass, a bar. row, a few baskets, and such other necessary implements of trade, together with sufficient ready cash to make his dajly purchases.
