No. in. There are various reasons why we can scarcely be satisfied with the state oi matters on the Murray. No doubt we pay nothing to New South Wales for the goods which pass into Riverina, and it is possible that, to some small extent, we have, on the Lower Murray, a quid pro quo for the smuggling which goes on unchecked in the neigh bourhood of Mount Gambier. No force of customs officers, however, can ade-1 quately watch the River Murray, and the system which compels two friendly neighbouring colonies to guard their fron tiers in this way is bad in the extreme. That it is aggravating to Sydney to see Melbourne become the port of Riverina is natural; but it is by no means wise on her part to adopt means for the pro tection of her revenue which most either divert trade into a channel which it wonld not take naturally, and which it cannot long keep nnder almost any circumstances, or compel a large and not altogether oontented por tion of her people to pay double customs dues. The following report from the mining sur veyor for the St. Amend division hws been received by the hon. the Minister of Vines " Sir.—I do myself the honour to report on late 'rashes' in roy division, "Beginning with Mogg'g (by the miners called P<evor>-hat). On • peaoefnl Sunday evening, not a month since, • murderous and. at the game time, most cowardly attack was mads upon a party of police encamped for the night upon the Doodal Ooosaa ran.
