Conscription [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 16 September 1916

SI)e DIWS. PUBLIBSHED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING SATURDAIY, •SEPTEMBER 10. Conscription : Oin the blood-stained fields of Eurbope the Australians have made a nime for their country. that will be read in history for all time. These men rose to the occasion when they knew that assistance was required to maintain the integrity of the. British Empire, under :whose flag we rejoice to live, and whose great. navy we have to thatik for being able to have such great. independence-- none greater exists in any part of the world. When'the heroes of the Dardanelles sailed awvay one might have imagined them repeating : For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrongs that need resistance, : For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do. Unfortunately, awful gaps have beo made in the lines of those bright and fearless men, and the vital question of the day is how they are going to be tilled. The voluntary system has drawn some hundreds of thousands of men, which stands to the credit S...

Grand Concert at Heidelberg. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 16 September 1916

Grand Concert at Heidelberg. (By Edith E. Armstroug.) Although a drizzling rain fell and the promised moon was not much in evi. dence, it did not interfere with the at. tendance or the-success of the concert in aid of the Heidelberg Cathohle building fund, which took place at the Rlecreatio IHall on Thursday, September 7. The hall was well filled and presented an at. tractive appearance, the stage being charmingly arranged with pink blosson, greenery and palms, while the Iloor, lhar. ing a covering of matting, added to the general comfort. The decorative work was carried out by Mrs. Tuohy and Mrs. Zimmerman, who must have given much time and artistic ability to tiransform the uininteresting (not to say plain) hall into quite a bower for the occasion. The concert opened with a finished performance of Chopin's G. Minor Bal. lade, by Miss Nellie Billings, who also played-a Chopin valse in the second hali of the programme. These were all too short. We would have gladly heard more from t...

CLOSING OF LIQUOR BARS. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 16 September 1916

CLOSING OF LIQUOR BARS. A public meeting was held in the Ivanhoe Hall on Thursday evening, 7th September, to advocate the closing of liquor bars at 6 p.m. The hall, which was almost full, would no doubt have been crowded but for the fact that the Referendum Bill had been withdrawn by the Government in favor of a Bill which was to be introduced in the State House to close all liquor bars at 6 p.m., the Government making the Bill a vital one. A choir, composed. of members from the various churches, occupied seats in front of the platform, and during the evening rendered the anthem " And the Glory" and " Halleujah Chorus,"' Mr J. Jenkin acting as conductor, and Mr.Ingham as pianist. Mrs Scott also gave a song in a pleasing manner. The chair was occuTe pied by Cr. Ball, and stirring addresses in favor of 3 o'clock closing were' given by Mr D. Smith, M.L.A., for Bendigo; Rev. J. E. Newnham, Mr J. J. Love (mayor of St. Kilda), and the Rev. W. JI. Hodge.
