What does it do? [Newspaper Article] — Student Notes/Canberra University College Students Association — 4 June 1948

What does., -it do? The work of .W.S.R. is also self-explanatory, but assistance with supply of text books, food, housing, and medical supplies is the outstanding method of helping university students recover from war. It may be. hard to realise here, but nourishing the life'of other universities in the long run stimulates our own.

HIDING BEHIND THE CONSTITUTION [Newspaper Article] — Student Notes/Canberra University College Students Association — 11 June 1948

'Sir , ?? - . HIDING BEHIND THE CONSTITUTION It was with regret that I read the inferred statement in the last 'but one issue of 'Student Notes' that the S.R.C. does not. intend to call a general meeting of students to discuss the Association* s disaffiliation with N.U.A.U.S.- This 'because only 58, insteat of the constitutionally required 90, votes were polled at the recent 'ballot. I would suggest that to require 90 members (28% of students) to sign such a petition is somewhat unreasonable and allows the S.R.C. a virtually unlimited field of action, without reference to the student 'body, except at the Annual General Meeting* In this respect, I would refer to Tasmania, where of students (7)? or Western Australia where 2%-3% (25) can petition the S. R. 0, to call an 'extraordinary general meeting on any aspect of . student affairs. From the above one might infer that the S.R.C. is afraid to. refer their decision to students for approval. Have they in mind the recent reversal of a d...

This week we are assailed again for having had. the ill-taste to infer that the argument on disaffiliation was 'becoming long-drawn out when last we wrote of it, Our correspondent s deal some shrewd 'blows, i ''faith; when we had read what they had to say we clutched our 'black cloaks tighter around us, 'bit our lower lip with rage . and snarled 'foiled again! THE N.U.A.U.S. QUESTION. [Newspaper Article] — Student Notes/Canberra University College Students Association — 18 June 1948

^ THE N. U. A. U. S. QUESTION. The 58 petitioners will 'be happy to learn that the 'conscience' of the S.R, C. has 'been stirred 'by its 'moral .obligations' and it has come out from ''behind the Constitution' with the announcement that a Special General Meeting will 'be held on July 9th to discuss the N.UvA.U.S. and other matters. At the meeting, a special sermon on. 'moral obligations'1 will 'be given for the edification of all present in general, and for one correspondent in particular. Prior to the meeting, the cases FOR and AGAINST affiliation, with N. U, A. U. S. will 'be printed and circulated^ either through these notes, or otherwise. At this stage, it might 'be very relevant to point out that the S.R. C, is the 'body, authorized 'by the Constitution, to manage' the affairs of the Students Association, and that it is not bound by any decision of a Special General Meeting, What] no 'moral obligations' *

WORLD STUDENT RELIEF. DON'T BRUSH THIS OFF-READ IT. [Newspaper Article] — Student Notes/Canberra University College Students Association — 18 June 1948

WORLD /STUDENT RELIEF. DON'T BRUSH THIS OFF - READ IT. This appeal has no attractive title to touch the patriotic heart. Further, it is addressed to people who are fast becoming hardened towards international relief. 'Stricken Europe' is just another phrase; 'starvation' a mere synonym for lower living standards. World Student Relief is a CHALLENGE to all -you intellectuals who talk vaguely about co-operation between nations .? who bewail the inaptitude of U.N. 0* , who deplore the 'veto' , who denounce this or that government for failing to co-operate.. Can a nation or government 'be any better than the people :wlio ? compose or elect it? Can the government improve before the individual? Do you want to improve government s? Why nqt start with yourself? What are you doing about international co-qperat ion? You can't blame Gromyko all the time, As W. S.R. is for students,, so very aptly students should be for W, S.R. , particularly those who quietly contemplate themselves as future l...

CORPORATE LIFE. With the tones of Miss Piggin' s sweeping criticism of a wasted year to date, still ringing in their ears, representatives of the S.R.C. (Miss Piggin, Messrs.
