In the first two quarters, Alexandra played over their opponents, but seemed to go to pieces during the third quarter, when the Creek put in some good work. However, the lead was too much for Alexandra, and they could not make up the detlcienov. The game was rather rough. owing to the umpire not being nearly as strict as he should have been. -Tennis. At the Invitation of the Mansfield tennis club, an Alexandra tennis team journeyed to Mansfield on Sunday last to engage in a friendly match on the following day. The Alexandra club were represented by. Mesdames Johnson and, Wylie. and Messrs. Lewis. Curry, Goodear and Irvine. Poisibly this team counll have been streigthened, hbut as is uual when a team plays away from home, it is it difficult matter to obtain the strongest representation. The Mansfield club was represented by avery strong combination, viz., Mesdames Chinnery and Phillips, and Messrs. Agricultural Classes. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

Agricultural Classes. ti as ----*--- The agricultural classes, which have been conducted in the shire hall for a fortnight by Government experts, under , the auspices of the Alexandra P. and A. ol Association, were concluded on Friday ol afternoon last. The classes were well m attended during the first week, but the at numbpr of students were considerably at less during the second week. no doubt, be owing to the amount of time lost in their W farm work. The time was not actually " lost, as most valuable information and / instruction was gained at the classes, but le a whole fortnight away from the farm b puts the farmer back considerably in his t1 every day duties especially at this time g1 of the year. If it were possible to hold h the classes with a break of a couple of b weeks between, there would be no doubt t1 that large attendances would be the ia general rule. THURSDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

THURSDAY. Mr R. T. Archer spoke last on " Dairy Breeding and Management." -He referred to the importance of the dairying industry In this State, and said that while other classes of rural work reduced the value of the soil, dairying rather enhanced it by in troducing foods into the soil, from outside sources. Plants and animals were bujit up of minute cells, inside of which was albumen or protoplasm, which was the life principle of plant or~animal life. These cells had the power to convert the foods into what was required for their sustenance. The combi nation of carbonio acid.gas drawn in by the leaves of plants from the air, and the water from the roots, made starchaand sugar, or carbo-hydrate. Butter fat consisted of car-. bonic acid gas and water, and starch. and sugar converted into another form, in oil. No plant food was removed from the soil in the cream. If the milk were sold from a, cow giving 000 gallons, as much phosphoric aicid would be taken fiom the soil as that absorb...

MONDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

MONDAAY. Mr. H. Halle commenced his course of lectures in connection with the agricultural classes with a ' Demonstration of Wool Cidrsing," to Illustrate how a clip should be put up for market. Cleanliness was the 'first essential, and as farmers usually used their woolshed as barns it was necosary to carefully wash out the shedI before com menciag to shear, nothing depreciating the price of wool so much as straw, ohaffl or any foreign e?latince. The nextsimportant item was light. Good light was necossi.ry, and frosted skylights were the best. as the light was then oven from morning till night, Hractioal shearers should also;bo engaged ; learners were apt to chop the wool about, the staple consequently being uneven, and an even length was a groat factor in selling wool. When a fleece was thrown out on the table the first thing to do was to take the stained wool off (if the fleece was a ewe's) and after that the fleece should be skirted. To skirt properly they should start at the ta...

WEDNESDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

WEDNESDAY. Mr. Archer, continuing his lecture on the Management of Stock, said all calves oexcept those for stud or show purposes should be dehorned before they are nine days old, and this is done by clipping the the hair from round the root of the bud ding horn (at this stage the horn is not attached to the skull). Then moisten the end of the caustic soda or potash stick and rub the tip of the horn with it for about a quarter of a minute, repeating this at intervals for a few minutes until blood begins to show, care being taken not to have the caustic moist enough to run or the skin wll be hurr.t and sores formed. Either fator dairy cattle will do much better in every way when ljhorle cd. Hoose or lung worm often causes grest morthlity among calves, and this is miost prevalent on low-lying wet ground.
