In pursuing the first plan he would be participating in the sale of an article, which had been proved to militate against the physical, social, and spiritual advance ment of society. The same reasons were equally applicabl...

[FROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 27 August 1886

[PROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT.] August 18. — A pubho meoting of tho rate payers of the Borough was held in the School of Arts to take into consideration tho advisability of borrowing £3,000 for drainnge purposes, and otherwise improving tho town. After the subject had been commented on by our wiseacres, it was decidca by a small majority not to- get into debt. And wisely too. For, if the Council had £3,000 to expend, tho residents in return would got another £3,000 worth of mud, and we have plenty already. As for the presont system of drainage, it is apparent to any practioal man that tho Council have been and are still trying to make tho water run up hill, hut they don't fail to maka the funds of the borough run the other way with a fall of about 19 in 20. At the same meeting the advisability of forming a Volunteer Corps was about to be considered, when an ' old sojer,' who had been a volunteer in England, told the would bo volunteers that he did not think there was anyone present wh...
