TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 8 June 1917

TO THIO 0DITOn OUP THB ADV?ETIBIR. Str.-I see that in your lasoot issue "Anti Humbug" takes it for granted that learning to shoot, and that the spoon sbouts are of no' military value. Now. I will try to show him that it is of esme vale. If "Anti Humbug" was In France and got into n tight corner and had a rifle and some nmuoition, he would he very plansed for the little bit heo learned about tifle shooting when heo was n member of theo olb. Members of Ritle Cltbe while ins camp are always celled on to act as mousketry and rifle instructors. Two of our mumbers acted as same while in camp. One got top score in his battalion and tie other one second top acore of the Pioneer IBattalion ; they are both now wearing the Sniper's IBdge in France. ELTHAM. A WORKING BEE. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 8 June 1917

ELTHAM. (From Our Correspondent.)   -'A WORKING BEE: " Had an aerial 'visitant taken a bird's-eye view on Monday last of a strip of territory lying between the residence of Councillor Morris and the Diamond Creek bridge, he might have boon puzzled considerably at the comn motion exhibited on terra firma. A number of human beings were moving about likea swarm of ants intent on accomplishing something evidently of importance to them. The solution is simple. The residents on the heights to thu east of the bridge being in need of a shorter route to the Heidelborg rond, also believing in the old saw that Providence or some other power helps those who help thenselveu, determined to have a " working bee" to clear a track on an unused road, Monday being a holiday found the opportunity, and pary in the day the workers mustered, some with pick and shovel and axes, whilst others made a very good use of thile devil" and another infernal instrument worked by a horse. Later on a plou...

SHOOTING AND FLUTING. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 8 June 1917

SHOOTING AND FLUTING. What's the use of all this splother, All this "Anti-Humbug" fluting, People throw at one another Through a little bit of shooting. Every person has a hobby On this land we've taken root, And the soldier and the bobby Have to go and learn to shoot. There are men who are adapted For to captain rifle clubs ; And I'm sure you wont find Apted Loafing round the local pubs. Now, a man who's fond of whisky Is uncertain with the gun ; He'd see two bullseyes so frisky When.there would be only one. Long years ago in days of yore, Before this modern change, If neighbours sought each other's gore 'Twas done at ten yards range. But now they load a fountain pen And write a paragraph. The "constant readers" read, and then They simply have a laugh. Why, let them get the local hall And have a warm debate ; The readers would come one and all, There'd be a record gate. Let "Anti" ante up his name And drop the nomn de plume ; He'll then arise to local fame From out the darkening gl...
