THE LEADER. JUSTICE TO ALL SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader — 14 April 1888

THE LEADER. JvSTICE TO ALL. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1888. WhAT might have been a most seri ons and alarming accicent was nipped in the bud by a mere chance last Mon day evening at the North Brighton railway station. It appears that a gatekeeper quite new to the work of attending to wicket gates had been stationed there, and, notwithstanding the fact that his mate, whom he had relieved had given him all necessary instructions and injunctions, he threw the wicket gates open for pedestrians prior to the passing of the up nnd down trains which were then passing each other at the above named station. This little incident leads us to refer to the inconvenience and loss of time caused to persons having occasion to cross the main roads and streets of Brighton as well as the Mordialloc and Oakleigh lines of railway where such roads or streets cross these lines con tiguous to their respective stations. We have no fault to find with the gatokeepers, most, if not all of them being men up to their w...

LOCAL ITEMS. [Newspaper Article] — The Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader — 14 April 1888

LOCAL ITEMS. -4- The only case at the Malvern Police Court last Saturday was that of E. Wilson, Inspector of Nuisances, for the Boroon dara Shire Council v. W. Woodmason for having left nighteoil spread upon his land situate within the Shire boundaries insuf ficiently covered to the danger of the public health. The council was repre sented by Mr. F. A. Atkyns, who produced a copy of the by-law which enacted that n ghteoil spread on any land must be covered witha layer of earth at least of a thickness of nine inches. The defendant admitted that he had so deposited the nightsoil, but pleaded that instead of earth he had used stable manure for cover ing the nighteoil upon his land, and had pursnaued the same process for a length of time on land within the Malvemn Shire boundary. Dr. Eccles one of thi magie trates assured Mr. Woodmason that the covering referred to did not kill the effete matter, and as the offence was a breach of the by-law, he and Mr. Jones, the other J:P. on the benc...

PAIN: ITS PREVENTION & RELIEF. CONCLUDED. No. 9. [Newspaper Article] — The Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader — 14 April 1888

PAIN: ITS PREVENTION & RELEF. I - -- CONCLUDED. -No.9. .:Bvr,.FAainaelpocron Pains ;nbout the head arise from ihany diFerent causes, and'therefore no one remedy is applicable to all. Let those, theri, who stiffer from cere bral pains remember that the distress they have to bear is buttthe symptom of some disorder of the general sys tein. Over fatigue will often cause congestion of the head, and in deli cate women this is often accompanied by a feeling as of a ball at the lower part of the neck, a kind of choking sensation. This kind of pain in the head is caused by temporary weakness of the heart. Sal volatile will help to remove it, with rest in the hori zontal position, and afterwards the diet should be carefully regulated, and a course of what is called "Chemi cal food" taken, with the sea-salt bath every morning. Bilious head aches are generally transitory, but point emphatically to the better regua lation of daily.habits of living. Four drams of colchicumn wine, an ounc...
