A CLIP OF WOOL FROM SHEARING SHED TO SHIP. VI. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 20 January 1899

A CLIP OF WOOL FROM SHEARING SHED TO SHIP. VI. In last article the subjects of catalogu ing wool and sotting the sample Hour were referred to, and the dilliculties at tending the separate cataloguing and showing of large and small lots of wool were mentioned. When the person making out the catalogue comes to the end of the greasy and scoured large lots, he is then in a position to put the num bers to each star lot, and the man on the sample floor cari put tliem in position, unless ho has beforehand made a specula tive allowance as to where the large lots will stop. Should he make a miscalcula tion in this respect (and tho inclusion of wool up to the last possiblo moment is pretty certain to upset his plans) lie will lind the sample bales of the large lots overlapping the star lots, and this may mean the shifting of hundreds of bales. Of course, where there is plenty of room a liberal gap can be left and the. star lot selling proceed simultaneously with the same operation for the lar...

In a recent issue of a London paper an ox traordinury discovery is described, and ib is stated provisional protection has been grantod for the invention, which consists of a method by which the human voice can bo carried loudly and clearly for miles. ,It is claimed by the inventor that the fitting of this apparatus in the House of Commons, and conneoting it to Hyde Park, would allow of thousands of people hear ing in oloar tones every word spoken in the Parliamentary Chamber, The patentee is Mr. Horaco L. Some Big Cheques, [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 20 January 1899

Some Big Cheques, Cheques for largo amounts seem to be the order of the day, but even Sir Thomas Lipton's large cheque in payment of import duties cover ing u certain period of time, the instalments on the purchase of the Anaconda mines, or on the Coast Railroad in America, which have till amazed the world in their turn, pale into in* significance compared with those that have been drawn recently. The payments m»do by the French Govern ment as war indemnity (o Prussia have hither to held the lirst rank, in the opinion ot well known linaneier.s, as the largest ever known ; but the cheque drawn for the largest amount on record represents the balance of the war indem nity, with the interest thereon paid by China to Japan,' namely, £11,000,857 10s 9(1 The Chinese Government borrowed, through the Hong Kong ami Shanghai Hank, the sum of £10,000,000, to pay this indemnity.
