FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 27 January 1872

FOOD FOB THE rEOl'LE. THE ridicule.vfIiicli Borne of the English agricultural journals poured out Borne months ago, upon tho attempt of the Australian colonies to feed the British population with preserved meat, was ill j timed, to say thc leost of it. lt was intended doubtless to act as a discourage- ment to the grar.iers on this side-from interfering with the market on that, .md was employed more in the interests of their fanning subscribers thau in those of tho many-boaded working-classes, lt was with a species of exultation that a drop in the price of tinned moats was commented upon at tho close of tho Franeo-PrusBÎan war, as though a final blow was given to a trade that could not exist in times of peace. Forthwith tho British people were to bc fed from legitimate sources, and the colonial mutton and beef might find an outlet in other directions, or cease to be developed. On looking closely to thc supply of meat for the British nation from British and approximate sources, it is ...

The Rockhampton Bulletin AND CENTRAL QUEENSLAND ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 27 January 1872

CENTEAX QUEENSLAND ADVEUTIEEE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1872. THE annual returns of tho declared values of imports and exports at the j port of Rockhampton, have just been prepared at tho Custom House, and aro published in detail in our commercial column. The total value of imports for tho year 1871, was £180,233, against £186,818 for the previous year. . Until 1871, there mas a steady decline since 1807, when tho total value of imports was declared at £313,909. But this declension is probably rather apparent than real, as tbe imposition of heavy ad valorem dattes has i "caused importers to underrate the value of their goods, whorenB previously thé tendency 'was in the opposite direction.. Howevor, it ip rather satisfactory to find that tho imports touched their lowest point in 1870, and that there was last year a perceptible, if small, increase. Another consideration that must in fairness be taken into account, is the fact that during the latter half of fast year ibero was only one st...

THE GERMAN LOSSES BY THE WAR. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 27 January 1872

THE GERMAN LOSSES BV TI1E WAH. A FEW days ago I liad occasion to cal upon a gentleman residing in thc itnme dialo vicinity of Barmen. He was temporarily nuscnt when 1 called, and I was received hy a young lady in deep mourning, whoso thin, pale half-tran- sparent face bore the unmistakable marie of a threatening early death. I had called for some special information on ; the subject of the relief of the poor in 1 Elberfeld and Barmen. As the young lady was unable to give me the papers j referring to tho matter, 1 was shown j into a room, there to await the return of the master of the house. There my eyes fell on a large tinnily Bible which lay ou a side-table. 1 could not resist the temptation to read, i found that j the gentleman whose arrival 1 was awaiting there had had a family ol' eight children, lour sons and four daughters. His wile had died some twenty years ago, and all their daugh- ters had died in their childhood. Of tho sona, tba eldest had fallon Düppel, in tho Danish w...
