AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY HOME-MADE FERTILIZERS . BY P . H . JACOBS . Many farmers aro not aware of the fact that they cuu easily make quite a large quantity of fertilizer on the farm , at a low cost , and equal to the best that can bo procured . Hones , which are wasted for want of some contrivance by which they should be reduced , are too valuable to bo thrown away , aud the ashes that are used alone on some crops would bo of greater service if united with phosphates and nitrogenous material . The proper method of utilizing bones , if no mill is convenient , is to break them into pieces about the size of a walnut . Then , in a largo hogshead , lay two inches of dirt , then two inches of bones , filling the spaces between thc bones with wood ashes . Over the bones place a layer of the same thickness of ashes , followed with another layer of bones , then with ashes , repeating the alt-ruuto layers till the hogshead is filled , allowing the upper layer to be ot ashes . As the layers are...

THE GARDEN [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

THE GARDEN Sweet Herbs . Every garden should havo a small bed of sage , thyme , savory , parsley , and marjoram . In fact , no gardon is comploto without them . They can be grown from flood , and once obtained remain for a long time , being propagated by tho seeds and roots . A vacant corner servos as a good place for them , or along the margin of tho walks . The great difficulty with herbs is that they aro usually neglected and allowed to die away . If they are to be permanent they should receive no . only care but an occasional manuring . Early Squash , The bush or patty pan is tho best for early use , and may be put out ot any time after warm weather begins . This vegetable is often destroyed by tho striped bug , and the proper method to pursue in order to prevent their attacks iB to placo coal tar in water and keep tho plants well sprinkled with the solution . Thoy may be allowed to grow until fully matured , but the squashes should not become too hard before being pulled . Pull...

$ yi _ i __ S _______ ? .... i _ Hl [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

$ yi _ i __ S ____!_____ ? .... i _ Hl Co-operation in Blooded Stock . There ia no better method by which farmers may co-operate than in tho matter of selecting stock . If a few farmers in each community would organize , and , with a small contribution from each , procure thoroughbreds for improvement , the expenso borne by each individual would he lint little , whilo the benefit to all would bo very considerable . Individual effort is often Insignificant , but co-operative effort is powerful . By union , farmers may easily procure the finest specimens of Shorthorns , Devons , Jerseys , Holsteins , Herefords and Angus ; the best strains of thoroughbred Clydesdale , Percheron and trotting horses ; the fine ivooled Merinos , the massive Cotswolds , and the elegant Shropshire ... They mry resort to tho Berkshire , Essex , Chester or Poland China for improve ment of their swine as t he y may prefer , while a 11 thc advantages pertaining to farm machinery may be secured and the cost of p...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

The Quirl Indication . In the hovine race , says Mr . Geor « e Blhtht , of Philadelphia , there are other marks which experience has taught mo to he of great value , such as the quirl on the hack . To many this may seem strange and ridiculous ; to me it indicates the centre of tho veins in the animal . In the cow , when fouud in the middle of tho hack , it indicates that tho nourishment tho animal receives goes toward the udder j when in thc shoulder , that it goes toward the head , horns and shoulders—parts unproductive . In the steer , when tho quirl is in the middle of the hack , the food the animal receives goes to the ribs and hind quarters , the valuable parts ; hut when on tho shoulder , tho fore quarters and horns receive the benefit of tho corn fed to him . Let me assure you , there is much advantage iu knowing how to apply this knowledge . The Milking Time . So strongly impressed upon the cow is tho time at which she is milked that she becomes anxious for the operation bef...

These pests are the worst enemies the poultry keeper has to contend with . I therefore give a simple cure if not a preventive . Take a hot pan or hot pot , place it In the henhouse and pour into it at least one pound of sulphur . Be careful not to inhale the fumes . Close all windows and doors and let tho lice enjoy the atmosphere for about two hours . Then air the house and give it a good coat of whitewash , not forgetting the roosts . Change the nests and you will And yourself free from these pests . —Cor . Bural World . Hamburgs . May is not too late for hatching these fowls , as they mature very quickly The pullets hatched this month should begin to lay in November , and oven earlier , and if kept in a good growing condition will pass into the winter full of vigor and ready for work . THE ORCHARD . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

THE ORCHARD . Setting Out the Fruit Trees . While there are a great many suggestions given for the proper planting of fruit trees , but few persons take into consideration the differences of soil . Some recommend not to plant too deep . Such advice iB well enough where the trees are to be placed in heavy soil , as the moisture is longer retained on such locations than on sandy soils , but if the trees are to be set out on thin soils , that easily absorb and give up moisture , then they should go in deep , or they will not live through the summer except by careful nursing . It is best not to apply manure at the time of putting out tho trees , for the reason that the stimulus Is too severe at first for the trees , especially if the manure is strong or unrotted . The process of fermentation around the tender roots has been proved to be not only too heating , but induces disease and attacks of parasites . Thoroughly rotted compost , made by mingling sod , fine manure , earth and decompo...
