STUDENT AND AbUMNI UITERATURE . It is becoming more and more a matter of inquiry why our students fail so ignominiously in producing a literature woithy of their high piivilcge as college men and women . There is a feeling abroad that the failure to wiite is an indication either of a dearth of ideas or a want of the power of expression ; perhaps of both . On any explanation the college must suffer fiom a suspicion of blame . It is said openly that not enough attention is given to English in tliecotnses offered , that the teaching is inadequate , &c , Kx ; and the Piofessois in charge aie apt to be held responsible for the results One glance , however , at the English department and a cursory examination of the methods used in teaching , will show that eveiy effoit is made to develop taste by making the students acquainted with the woiksof the best wiiters . Beginning in Stevens Hall with the interpretative leading of several classics , continued in the Freshman year by i...

PRESIDENT ffleKNICHT SEEKS QUIET . Yesterday morning Dr . McKnight left for a ten day trip to Johnstown , N . V ., where he will visit his daughter , Mrs . L . S . Black , in the hope of regaining his accustomed strength and vigor . Only the most urgent entreaties on the part of friends and family could induce the Doctor to absent himself from the work for which he has so often made the greatest personal sacrifice . Every student we are sure wishes our President a pleasant and profitable trip and trusts to see him return much recunerated in _strength .

TOWN NOTES . Gettysburg is distinctly American , knowing no distinctions of race or color . Last week the town entertained several large excursions of _unifoimed firemen , and surviving soldiers of the battle . At the end of last week came one of the personally conducted excursions of the Pa . R . R . numbeiing about 150 . Monday of this week saw 1600 coloied folks fiom Baltimoie in town . They were _everywhere The electric cars seemed to be loaded to the ceilings with passengers , with a fringe hanging on to the outside of the cais . The overflow took 111 the battlefield on foot . UUORK ! We hear that our foot ball team may be seriously crippled this fall in their games away fiom home because some of the best players may not be permitted to accompany the team , they having fallen below the giadc set by the Faculty as the condition for such permission It is not our purpose to discuss the rule . While it seems to discuminate against athletics , it sets a piemium upon work We wish to addiess a fuendly woid to the men who ha \ e allowed themselves to fall under the nile . Get those conditions off ! We need your presence on the team . You owe i ! to the college whose name you bear in every contest .
