NEW ORLEANS . A considerable excitement prevailed in this city , and a part of the presbytery of the church of St . Such is one of the cannons of that church .

Next Monday s mail will probably brine ; us the President s Message and the proccedinrrs of Congress for a few of the first days of its session . The Message will be sought for with avidity by all parties which take an interest in public affairs—because all parties are perfectly satisfied that the President and his friends have not as yet adopted any settled principles of national policy . Their whole course thus fur has been one of expedients . AY hat was Jackson republicanism two years ago had no relation to Jackson republicanism of last year , and will probably have as little sympnthy with the same article fbrthe ensuing year . In fact , those men who support the President , eight or wrong , have had no little trouble in this particular ; and their experience has taught them caution . The President at one time was the true friend of internal improvements in the West;—we were then told that something wodld be done for ns that would throw into the shade the niggardly appropriat...

A VISIT TO SrMMZONIA—ALIAS , THE SOK . 'H [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 15 December 1831

A VISIT TO SrMMZONIA—ALIAS , THE SOK . H No one here need be told of the sufferings to which the traveller is often subjected , vho undertakes to cross our prairies in the dfptu of winter . The chilling , piercing winds , gathering strength as they progress over the vast levels of our native meadows , come upan the way-faring man , with a force and keenness , which it seems almost impossible to withstand : and yet he must go on , in many cases , many a weary mile , without the hope of shelter , his very existence depending upon his exertions to carry himself forward to the nearest settlement . Had Thompson been familiar with the scenery of the West , he could not have painted to the life a more faithful picture of the hard fate of some unfortunate man , who has perished in our prairies , than is found in his incomparable poem . • Impatient flouncing through the drifted helps , Stung w ith the thoughts of home ; the thoughts Rush on his nerves , and call their vigor forth In many...

raoftte Journal : -the Bank made of your colctnporarv editor . MANY READERS . We have not , we believe , issued a single number of our paper which does not contain in some way or other , an expn views in relation to the U . S . Bank . We therefore think the request a little singular , if not extraordinary . Nevertheless we are willling to gratify the writer with our views distinctly ar .. l concisely upon the subject . We then say that we are friends of the U . States Bank . We believe that it has accomplished the great objects designed by its charier . We know of no evils which have resulted from the institution . We believe that we are indebted to it for a good degree of the prosperity now exhibited in the Western Country . We believe that a just regard to the interest of the people requires the Bank to be re-chartered . We see no objection , if it shall be deemed advisable ( although we do not acknowledge its necessity , ) to make such alterations in the charter as will satisfy t...

We shall soon receive the proceedings of the National Republican Convention . The people of the United States have a deep interest in the nominations made by that body . If by any means the opposition to General Jackson can be concentrated upon any suitable candidate , the days of party misrule will be numbered .

WESTER > - ) CONVENTION . —It is known to our readers that a Convention of friends of American Industry in the West , is expected to meet at Cincinnati on the second day of January next . The lateness of the time at which the notice was received here , rendered it impossible to elect a delegate from this Congressional district in season to be present at the Convention . We regret this the more , as we are firmly of the opinion that Illinois is decidedly in favor of the protecting system . Indeed , we have not as yet seen the fact called in question . Since the above paragraph was in type , we have received the Shawneetown Gazette of the 3 d , which says : — We say , let Illinois for the sake of her lead and salt , if for nothing more , be represented at Cincinnati . There is not time for such organized movements as have been made in some of the other states . But she can do some thing . The term of the Supreme Court may , perhaps , afford opportunity for such organiza...

We have been not a little amused with the contents of a letter dated at Belleville , ( Illinois , ) Sept . 10 , 1831 , and first published in the Washington Globe . Whoever has read the electioneering productions of a would-be governor , need not be at a loss for the origin of this production . Ii is a very fair specimen of the satirical powers of its author as well as his strength of intellect . He says there is a great prospect of a Hickory mast in Missouri and Illinois . Very likely . Mast , gentle readcr . is food for hogs— whole hogs , of course . He recommends the Hickory broom , because it can sweep the filth from the parlor . A very suitable employment for the old Hickory broom , but a most unsuitable place to find filth . The gentleman s quotations of scripture are quite as fortunate . He professes to use the language of St . Paul and says— none of these things move us not . Whew!—St . Paul never uttered such nonsense . The whole letter is of the same stamp—a farrag...

Chief Engineer at Washington , containing the results of the surveys of two routes for the National Road , from Vandalm to Jefferson City . We shall make a brief abstract from this Report . The Southern route , leaving Vandalia , passes near Greenville , ( Illinois , ) through St . Louis , Manchester , near Point Labadie and Gasconade , UiJeflerson City—a distance of 170 , 05 miles . The Northern route , leaves the same point , passes near Eminence , crosses the Mississippi at Portage de Sioux , and passes near St . Charles and Loutre Island to Jeflerson City —a distance of 170 . 17 miles . Estimated cost of constructing the road on the Southern route , 8990 , 358 ; on the Northern route , $ tip > , 158 . The Report says—The investigations were directed to a crossing of the Mississippi River . After some examination , attention was particularly drawn to two points...

QyTHE REFORM BILL has met the fale we anticipated in the House of Lords . The Commons have resolved to support ministers —who will of course retain their places . This resoli . lion of the Commons ( says the Focus , ) will be considered as a pledge to support rainisti rs in the project , which is recommended , of a creation of Peers from the eldest sons of those favorable to the Reform Bill , in numlicrs sufficient to create a majority for it , when it shall again be presented with some modifications . Should not this plan speedily be adopted and succeed , there is no telling what calamities are in reserve for the English nation . Nothing less than bloody civil war , and an overturning of the constitution , may he anticipated . [ See foreign news . !

SINGULAR AFFAIR . —One day last week , Mr . George Madeira , arrived in this village from Galena : he here stated that he had broken jail at that place , —where he had been con _ fined for stabbing a Mr . W T ells , in a fit of jealousy , who died of the wound : he also stated that he was on his way to see the Governor , with the view of obtaining a discharge or reprieve—we hardly know what to term it . But we doubt much whether he visits the governor . It is far more probable—with the brilliant precedents before him—that he has gone to Washington for an appointment .
