Now we are privately advised, in such a way that there is no question about iU correctness, that the Major will not be, nor has been, a candidate for the Governorship. He will, however, it his friends so desire, bo a candidate before the straight Republican convention lor Lieutenant Governor. Some of oar people, if not the major ity of them, have felt very much dis coaraged, during' the past three months, over the prospects to extend this road on west from Paola to Salina. The cer tainty of the extension was thought to be all right, and then it became dim in deed. Franklin county, some time ago, submitted a proposition to aid the road, and then it was withdrawn at the sugges tion of B. S. Stevens, general manager f the JL, K. &. T. R. R, that the com pany would not then accept the terms. The trouble was this : Last fall when the road was completed to Paolo, in Miami county, it was supposed Franklin county wnuld act promptly and rote aid. But she was tardy, and only this spring, after fully realizing that the road would not come a mile nearer her territory without the as sistance, was it that she made the effort to do the fair thi ng.
