THE HELPING HAND. Amid ' the pestilence that walk elh by i;ght anid the destruction that wmtelh 'by noonday,' it is gratifying to note the many hands stretched forth to help in their.sor es. nerd the dest'.tute sick of our afflicted cities. From every part of thih broad land comes answer in the shape of aid until it seems as though charity herself had :ecome tihe reigning element in society. It is sot a questlion as to how much is needed. The motive is to succor with all the means available in ev ery community untouchetd by the scourge, and to succor quickly without waiting to know the meas are of relief required. There is no doling out of fund4, but a gener bus, nay. a lavish outpouring of sob.tuntial aid, with assurance of continuance without limit. That is a beautiful trait of humari chaor acter which is evoked as by univer sai inspiration, to stand between life and death among the ifflicted poor, and stay their sufferings.when it may, or lay them in their last resting place when...

YELLOW FEVER. 'ATII AND M1USTARD SEED RE MOVE MOUNTAINS. -AusTIr, Aug, 1878. Eijtors Demwocratic Statcsman : I noticed in your issue of the 30th ult', the following: "'In 1830 an American commo dore gave a citizen of Houston en antidote for a yellow fever. It was a teaspoonful of whito mustard seed in a dram. of pure whiskey, taken !hrce times a day. The citi zen says this will irevent any one taking it, and he has passed t rough hall dozen epidemics with out self or family having it. And give to you in this what I know about white mustard seed as a prophylactic or preventive of yellow fever. In 1867 I was post surgeon at Brenham. The garrison consisted of about one hundred souls, officers and their families and enlisted men. Before the yellow fever ap peared at Brenham it was epidemic at Galveston and Houtson. Most of the enlisted men then serving at Brenham were recruits, and this 1867, their first season South. This was the case, too, with all officers at.d their families. The k...

WOMlEN GE]'I! ING T'AL LI2:l THAN MIn. A oirrespondeott inl the New York Tribune, who claaim to have given special attention to the sub ject, insists that wowtMn re iecorm ing taller than men, that large numbers wallcag together on the streets indicate this fact, and that the change is growing g:eater all the time. A reason for this thing is the great question. The writer has arrived at the conclusion that it results From the exces.ive use. while young. of whi-key and tobac co, That the system is poisoned by these habits of drinking, smok ing and chewlng, and the growth is dwarfed. We allow the corres' pondent to give his own reasoning on the subject, thus : 'Of course there are plenty of exceptions there are still very tall men, there are still very short women. But the disproportion is increasing, and in the wrong way. And wherefore? There are meens of checking or arresting growth, it is the effect of some poisons, as they deprive the nerves of a portion of their power. They say t...

COTTON TENDI)ENCIES. One of the most important i. atures of the cotton business of this port. during the late commercial year, was the de cline in the overland move tient to Northern and Atlan tic ports, and the large in crease in the receipts at New Orleans. Three considera tions were at the bottom of this favorable inclination of the cotton business, the liber al and intelligent management of the Chicato, St. Louis and New Orleans Bailroad, which controlled a large amount of cotton from Memphis and oth er points in Tennessee, the T improved faculties for receiv ing and shipping country- i8( .compressed bales by reason of the Belt Railroad which per= o" l mitted deliveries from the cars Ics directly to the ships in the r harbor, and the great im provements made in the com pressing machinery at our va rious cotton yards.
