~IE -: TRUE DEMOCRAT. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT ST. FRANCISVILLE, LOUISIANA. Londoners drink 1400 tons of liquid mnud a year, according to recent expert testimony before the County Council. There are many conditions at the present time which suggest great pros perity in the near future, maintains the American Cultivator. A Denver printing house has just booked an or der for 350 placards bear ang the words "Don't blow out the gas." The Colorado Legislaturo evi dently is about to convene, comments the Chicago Times-Herald. In the last fiscal year the receipts of New Zealand railroads, which are owned and operated by the Govern. ment, were $5,757,400, and the run ning expenses $3,656,700, leaving over two millions profit to the Govern ment. A Brussels paper relates that not long ago the Prince of Monaco killed a whale on the coast of Africa, and made a present of it to some fisher men, who, on cutting open the whale's body, found a large amount of amber gris, which they sold for $20,000. REALM{ OF STYLE. BIIIRROV )0Oh1 FAS.HON FO DIUESSY WOME:N. 6ttractions at the Opera--Winter Amuksements at Tuxedo-Some New Costumes Seen at the Waldorf, Etc., Etc. (Special New York Letter.) l1E theatres and the opera are claiming a great share of public attention at the pres ent time, although it cannot .be said that we have any very great or very novel attractions at any of the ,popular play houses just now. Nev. erthelces, the New Yorkers are a great theatre-going people, and those houses which have attractions worthy of patronage have certainly very little reason to complain in regard to the size of the crowds which attend the pightly performances. The opera, of course, is always cxcellen't, and this season is no exception to the general rule. It is a great pity that Melba's throat has given her so much trouble as to prevent her singing any more at present. 'The last opera, in which I heard Melba was "Lucia di Lammer moor," and never shall I forget her magnificent rendition of t...

WO '1 NFLUENCE Y r ? o CHAPITER II. THE COUSINS. On tne southeastern coast of Nan taucket Island is situated the little town of Siasconset, formerly a fishing hamlet, founded by brave and hardy men, who built their box-like cabins on the bol'l bluff rising from this dangerous coast, and wrestc(l from its waters their har ~ets of cod and pollock. For two centuries this place had an uneventful, unprogressive existence, but lately the hand of iniproveminnt has btct:h,hl it, and under the n:olernizing Uirlui nce, it is graniually tending to warns the realizatin of that much abused thing, a summer resort. Whenever the flesh is on the throne, : the devil is king. Unless you want to be poor, don't try to keep all you get. - The man will always be busy who y follows Christ. The devil has no better helper than a ] armless looking lie. it is harder to dinc. r~ith some men than it is to fast alone,. We are rich. not in what we hlave, but w il 5hat we cannot lose. Is thereanything the devil can't make out of an envious man? Live to do good, and you will never tire of your emplloyment. When you pray for a revival, don't go to church with a long face. The more men disappoint us, the more we should have faith in God. When a little mand is lifted up, every y finds out-that he is little. The man who thinks he knows others, is a great str:lnger to himself. The man who would be considered wise often turns out to be otherwise. Do away with a personal devil, and there is no need of aI personal Clirist. It is a mistake to call anything suc cess that is not according to God's plan. ;If you knew that t...

iii __i t I lE : TRUE -:- DEMOCRAT. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT ST. FRANCISVILLE, LOUISIANA. The Governor of Pennsylvania makes a strong plea for better school facili ties in rural districts in order to check the tendency of country youth to re. wsove to the cities. Jf Sir Lepel Gritfia gives the popular tion of the famine districts in India as 41,500,000. The cablegrams say that a million and a quarter are now em lboyed on Government relief work, but such relief seems to be wholly in adequate. Asbestos has recently been applied by a Massachusetts firm to the manu facture of shoes for worhinginen em ployed in foundries anti smelting works. It is asserted that the new shoes, beside.s being mote comfort able, cost less than leather hoes and wear indefinitely. ,Tames It. TH -: TRUE :- DEIOCRAT PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT ST. FRANCISVILLE, LOUISIANA. lIenelek, Negus of Abyssinia, has ordered from Poijaow, the Russian painter, a picture to represent the battle of Auda, in which the Italian forces met so disastrous a defeat. The picture will interpret the idea that St. George aided the Abyssinians. It will be hung in the Negus's palace. When the thermometer went to twenty-three degrees belw zero in Wisconsin the other day some of the many lakes in that State were covered with ice a foot thick, and others were not frozen over at all, greatly to the mortification of the dwellers there about. The phenomenon was never j noticed before. --- _ I As an illustration of the change in the social habits the Trenton (N. J.)
