THE ATLANTIC We have seen and conversed with nearly all tho passengers taken into Erie by the Propeller, who arrived here about 13 o'clock Saturday, in the Key Stone State. Nearly the whole num ber are stopping at tho National Hotel. They represent the conduct of the officers of the At lantic, as moat culpable and cowardly, with tho exception of Mr. Givan Clerk for tho trip. Mr. G., did everything which a daring and generous man could do; was ceaseless in his efforts to save life, and the last to abandon the ill-fated steamer. When he got on board tho Propeller, lie immediately set to work to aid the unfortu nate passengers, many of whom were left almost wholly destitute of clothing. Tho passengers unite in saying that after the collision, tho steam er kept on her course ; and from that fact many wore, lulled into a fatal disregard of exertions for safety. A lady told us that the regular mo tion of tho Vessel caused her to neglect all ex ertion for safety, until a miracle was requir...

Railkoad to Hudson's Bay. It will bo seen by nn extract from the Liverpool Chronicle, in another column, that nn English Company huve contracted to construct 100 miles of railroad from Quebec toward Hudson's Bay, at 10,000 per mile, and that the line is Intended to be push ed , rapidly forward until it reaches that great Northern sea. ' Tho whole distance is COO miles. For ourselves, wo do not see what there is to support a railroad in that direction, but if the Canadian Government or the British Govern ment see fit to build it, wo certainly have no objection. On tho the contrary, we would sug gest the expediency of u lino of steamers from the Northern terminus of the road to the North Polo.'' It v6uld bo delightful in" hot weather to run up to North Pole City, and take n glass of -ice water iresn irom me nanus ot old Uoreaa. Republic. Beneficent Act. STEAMER ATLANTIC. We publish the annexed corumunicalinn. bv re quest of the writer, aa another version of the oc currences on the Atlantic. Free Press. Gentlemen: Noticing a utateraent in the colums of your paper, signed by E. B. Ward, the owner of the steamer Atlantic, (taken from the testimony given by his own Officers and the crew, who it would be expected would of course endeavor to justify themselves) as what we call 44 a full statement of the occurrence." As a sur vivor and observer of the disaster, I take the liberty of presenting a few questions and facts for reply. Without speaking of the Inexcusable neglect that caused this disastrous collision, (the fact that two steamers came in contact in n still star light night needs no comment.) I would men tion what I know in relation to the Officers who were in command of the steamer, for whom R B. Ward says that "he is accountable." 1 would ask L. B. Ward; I would ask the public, if the fact of the Captain authorizing the boat to ...

WHIG RECKLESSNESS. The whigs always rely on deception, and no deception is too monstrous to be attempted by them. We have before" us a whi g electioneer ing document, published for dlsribution from the same office with the Republic newspaper, which charges the democratic party with extrav agance, by affirming that although Mr. Polk was elected with professions of economy, the ex. penses of the government soon jumped up from twenty-one or two millions, to sixty millions per annum." - The first year Mr. Polk's administration de frayed the expenses of the government, and paid war expenses and public debt to the amount of four millions of dollars, at a cost to the Treasury of only twenty-eight millions. Mr. Polk administered the government and do faryed the expenses of a foreign war, which was forced upon the country by the invasion of our own territory, with a less annual expenditure than the whig administration requires to con duct the government in a time of peace. The greatest outla...

THE PATRIOT MARTYR. It is now generally believed that the noble Irishman, Smith O'Brien, the high-souled and daring champion of the people, against their hereditary oppressors in the Green Isle, is slow ly and severely pining Hi life away under the ' influence of climate and the rigors of his con finement in the far-away penal colony to which he was transported. The thraldom of tyranny to which he is daily subjected, is said to have almost done its fatal work on the noble victim. Yet there is no throb of sympathy for the poor captive, in the bosom of the present whig administration at Washington. No strong hand was stretched forth to interpose, between O' Brien and his jailers, even though aid was be sought by thousands and tens of thousands of our citizens. The Dublin Nation in a stirring appeal to its countrymen to be up and a doing before it is too late, exclaims: "There is no time now for coolness and deliberation ; for every word we speak there is a throb the less of life in th...
