dasdsa Santa Monica Items. tVroisi the Outlook. 1 . The brig Tanner left the wharf last Friday, for San Francisco, with 230 tous of brta. Tbe steamer Orizaba, on her down trip last week, discharged 350 tons of freight nt this port. This is tho largest cargo for some time. A huge wbale made its appear ance one day last week, and floated around for awhile between the wharf and the outer buoy. Sev eral gentlemen were ou the wharf at tbe time and bad a good look at the monster. The monotony nf our little town was disturbed slightly yesterday morniug by a couple of our orderly citizens, who seem to have forgot ton tbe early lesson of the nursery rhyme which gives a timely warn ing against the use of one's linger nails upon another's optics. We were surprised at a statement made by an oflioer of tbe A neon last evening. He said that the beet of Oregon is much inferior to that of Southern California. The differ ence was so marked that all ou the veaaei noticed it. This rather "takes the wi...

The Santa Monica Breakwater. Tbe Santa Monica Outlook con- j tinuea to argue Ihe merits of that place as a point for the construc tion of a breakwater. We are heartily with it on that proposi tion. In fact, although the Her ald cannot claim to have treated ot the subject as often, or with as much minuteness of information as the Outlook, ours was tbe first journal to publish and eudorse Commander Taylor's opinion of the practicability and advisability of a breakwater at Santa Monica. dasdasds A Startling Ocurrence. Indianapolis, March Bth.—A startling event that occurred on Wednesday night last in the Meth odist Episcopal Church at Letter's Ford It regarded by many people in Indiana as a direct interposition of Divine Providence for the pun ishment of the scoffer. A revival had been in progress in the church for two weeks. Ellas Bidlnger, a married man, about twenty-five years of age, and Robert King hud been disturbing the meetings by making sport of those who led the services. Ou Wednesday night about seventy-live persons were present. During the exercises Bid lnger and King began to create v disturbance. Mr. Jones, the minister, went to expostulate with them, laid his hand on Bidine.er'sshoulder, aud urged him to change his way of life. Bidln ger replied with an oath that be would never change his ways. A few moments afterward, while Michael Shadle, a member of the congregation, was leading in pray er, lightning flashed Into the churob, extinguishing all the ...

Great Movements Have Great Landers. It Is somewhat surprising that a movement which has attained the proportions of the Worliiugmeu's party in California should have done so without, so far, showing that it possesses a single man of overshadowing ability. Kearney, who has thus far wielded almost absolute power in the Labor organ ization, is a very ordinary man from almost any stand point but Billingsgate. Even as a human condirit for slang, denunciation aud oaths, he shows nothing of the ca pacity to discharge them easily aud with the requisite degree of-veloc ity. In the shuttlecock and battle dore game ot Billingsgate between Orovo L. Johnson and Kearney, the. former distanced the orator of the sand...

dsdsadasdas Submitting to Disgrace. riau Francisco submitted to a stain upon her honor when ram pant ruffianism was allowed to run rough-shod over a respectable con course of her citizens. Disguise it as we may, by saying that all parties iv this are apparently working for the same end, the in sult has been placed upon tbe fore head of the commonwealth, and hereafter we must expect to be called a commuuity of cowards, who do not daro to assert their rights, unless the Insult Is effaced. It cannot be done by putting tables ou Montgomery street, with at tendants to importune for signa tures to a paper to be prcseuted to the Legislature—there is no asser tion of manhood in that. Tbe atonement must be made in public assemblage, with citizens of tbe claaa who called the first meeting, with a Chairman of their own choosing, with Vice Presidents, iv accordance with custom, with statesmen and clergymen aud lawyers and physicians to deliver addresses: with privilege for a Senator to speak wi...

With Abundance. A ride through the rurul sections of Los Angeles county cannot fail t> impress anyone with the won derfully fertile character of the county upon which our city relies so largely for her growth. This year there has been no need whatever of calling into play our Irrigating facilities in order to raise bountiful crops of the cereals. Everywhere the only danger is of the too rank luxuriance of the grain, which may lead much of it to lodge. There is no exaggeration in claiming that the crops of this county this season will be fully twice as large as those of any pre vious year. Tbe best and most practical far mers Log Angeles county has ever had think there is no...

Jus Sirrahl. A Thrifty District. From Col. J. M. Barney, princi pal owner of the Silver King mine, who returned from tbere ou Thurs day, weguther the following facts: Another battery of live stamps, with all shafting, etc., and two more Frue concentrators have been shipped from San Francisco; they are due here Monday or Tuesday, and will be at once hauled out to Picket Post by Burnett, who will be here for that purpose with Lord & Williams's train. All tbe neces sary lumber has been bought aud was shipped from Prescott ou the 20th. If no accident occurs tlie new machinery will bo connected with the present mill and be at work crushing ore about May Ist. As the Silver King company has paid five consecutive mouthly div idends of $50,000 each, since its incorporation, with only live stamps, the supposition is that ten stamps will increaso the dividends to $100,000 per month. This supposition is strengthened by the fact that Col. Barney reports ore enough on the dumps to employ ten ...

$0$ 3Up,elc.o imalrt. What is Ligitimate Warfare? A century ago a Erench Marshal issued un order agahi9t employing explosivo shells, on tbe ground that llieso missiles were "not gen erally used by polite nations, and Frenchmen should tight according lo the laws of honor." That was the era of etiquette in war—a day which produced the story of Foute uoy, with Its "Gentlemen ot the Guards, Are first!'' Modern war long Bince got over its scruples against the use of explosive shells, and we do not hear as mucli now as we heard a dozen year* ago of the immorality of explosive bul lets for infantry arms. Admiral Lord Dunsany, in a recent lecture on the laws and customs of war, as limiting tho use of fireships, ex plosive vessels, torpedoes aud sub marine mines, noted that early in the century it was held lawful to kill tlie crews of tire ships, when captured, on the ground that they employed an in human device in fighting; but now, he said, such a slaughter was never looked on with favor. ...
