It may be true, for instance, that the average undergraduate learns very little and cares very little for learning; and it may be true that our colleges are nurseries of disbelief and Immorality. But the two things to gether cannot be true. If our uni versities -were filled with an eager, passionate youth, avid of ideas and ideals, there would be danger in heretical voices from the cathedral. Such a danger the European univer sities have often experienced. The French collegian has played a prom inent part In demonstrations and emeutes. The German Burschen chaften have made his...

Hays City Free Rrcso hays city. KAN 8. SHOOTING STRAY DOGS. The reports of the opening of the dog-killing season in several cities are replete with brutality. The pollcv men shoot at all the proscribed ca nines, and in missing them, which Is oftener the case than not, they are apt to destroy the lives of men, wom en and children, who may happen to be within pistol range. If the bullet Sits the dog at all, it probably wounds the poor brute,, and makes an other wise safe and sane dog a writhing, foaming creature, mad from fear and pain, and scattering alarm and dis gust wherever it may run or drag its tortured body, says the Washington Post. Even when the policeman is marksman enough to dispatch the dog without suffering or scattering bul lets among pedestrians, the killing is offensive to the sight of every human being with a spark of feeling and is brutalizing to Impressionable children. In the midst of the heat and semi hysteria which may be expected from the dogs and dog days, Was...

Hays City Free Pres3 HAYS CITY. KAN 3. Drivers of ueiop.unes should Keep to the rlsht. Clean streets and alleys mean bet ter public health. Help the summer charities to help the poor ward, off disease and death. Orvllle Wright rose to the occasion. Only a very deaf man does not hear the call of the summer resorts at this time of the year. Very soon the days will begin to grow shorter, like the funds of the man on vacation. A lemon ramine is threatened, it is said. Perhaps this is due to the fre quency and number with which they have been handed out of late. Poison ivy adds nothing to the gen eral joy of a Sunday school picnic. Let the management bear this in mind. If tke scorching automobilists blew up their dust in front instead of stir ring it up behind they would go more slowly. Free and independent America has 100,000 hay-fever victims. They should take the matter to the supreme court as it is clearly unconstitutional. As no word has been received from Peary for a good while it ...
