CONDITION OF PARIS. From Appleton's Journal. There some stirring on the streets, and some feeble strivings after pleasure in the daytime, at least)? for at night the streets are de serted. No wonder. The provision of gas is limited, the police arc on on the alert, arrests arc numerous, private revenge is burning slow and deep, revolversanduiiVi-a-renf are not all given up, and the authorities have too good reasons not to encour age the sale of petroleum. Visitors from all countries already crowd our hotels, lounge over lxmle vards, bask under the fine sun, and seek in vain for a cab or a coach the Aulomedons of those vehicles being rare, and their exactions so tremendous that ten francs per hour arc sometimes asked for and given freely. Greeks and men from the banks of-the Danube and the Nile, come in shoals to contemplate ruins of whicli no description can give an adequate idea. What ruins! What a picturesque desolation! Fireside Department. Thrilling Incident. The wld of fiction hardly con tains a more 'thrilling Chapter man an incident which marked the life of the late Eev. Mr. Lee Presbyterian minister of the vil lage of Waterford, Isow York. Tfiough we have no official re turns .from the different States that held election on Tuesday last, the returns thus far .received indicate Republican gains and triumphs ev erywhere. .Even in New York State, where the corrupt Tammany (Dem ocratic) Eing spent .thousands of dollars; the Republicans carry the State byr 35,000 or upwards. We arc glad' to state also that several of the Reform .Democrats in New York City arc elected over the Tammany ' ites. Let us rejoice. NATIONAL DEBT. The payment on the national debt during the month past was slightly above the general average, but not as large as during the' month pre vious. .Still it shows that the work of liquidating the debt is steadily progressing, and that it will be dis posed of within a comparatively brief time, as matters go.
