The Talisman of Beauty. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 19 February 1861

The Talisman of Beauty. fHariposci ©alette BY NEWELL. Full many a wight whose glass commends hi* looks, Whose princely toilet sports the latest styles, Of manners modest and deep read in books. Is left to wonder when proud beauty smiles; For long he's strove to find those hidden nooks In woman's heart—responsive to his wiles : And strove in vain. His merit placed above— Some arrant coxcomb wins his lady-love. Then like a doleful dunce he mopes and sighs, And deems the wide world holds none other like her, Gazes at the moon, writes sonnetts to her eyes, Wishes that the knave who won, would strike her, That he may haste his journey to the skies, Or, zounds ! that worse place told of by the Yicar • But wanting some such unction for his pains. He makes his will, and then blows out his brains. 'Tis not for us to guess the why and wherefore, When lovely woman doth true merit passAffecting scorn. It suits her not; and therefore, She giggles at it oft and weds an ass : 'Tis quite enough tha...
